I think everyone here is yammering the same thing....Dark Canuck is an amazing ass song so why can't we hear it being played?

The Answer is simple.

Its my fault, I love that song, but the Hip obviously hate me. They refuse to play it when I go to the show..

Im sorry guys, I don't know why they hate me, but they do...and now we all have to suffer..

I disagree with the analysis of the hip's set list here. For a band with 10 studio albums to go on tour to promote a new album and play some of their lesser known songs is almost, to quote Gord, "A physical impossibility"

In the hip's case, do the math: 24 song set, 8 from IBE. We know they completely ignore album #1, so that gives you 16 songs and 8 albums to play with... Meaning, on average, only 2 selections per album. I would find it difficult to believe that they would omit one of the most popular two SINGLES from an album, in favour of playing a track from an album that isn't a single at all, and thus, lesser known. It would be nice to see them mix in the odd one, but it isn't something I expect to see, given the logistics of the thing.

More food for thought: It's difficult enough to remember how to play and have rehearsed 24 songs for a show, never mind 35 or 40 for an entire tour. Even if you've played them all a thousand times before.

But, you could prove me wrong - write a 24 song set list that no one on here would have any qualms with.... or 30, or 40..... it probably won't matter. The hip are so thoroughly loved in this part of the world, that unless you include just about every song in a massive 100+ song set list, you'll probablly leave out someone's favourite.

---sorry about the long-winded defense, just wanted to take another side. ---

Nah, id be happy with a 40 song setlist...i could probably die in peace..

Check the London setlist. No Nautical, no Grace, no So Hard Done By, but they gave us Fire in the Hole and Daredevil.

I do agree that nobody is ever going to get their dream setlist. Anybody who goes to a Hip show hung up on hearing certain songs is doomed to disappointment, and the sad part is that they set themselves up for it with their own expectations.

- schaggs - 12-20-2004

While I wasn't saying that it was completely unlikely to hear some of the other tracks, I was just going on the probability of things. Songs like Fire In The Hole and Daredevil are probably chosen to be included (at rehearsal) because someone enjoys playing it, or to avoid the boredom that comes along with playing the same few songs over and over. Even still, the likelihood of these songs are low. Sure, Daredevil was played in London, but how many times over the rest of the tour was it played? How many times did they omit Grace, Too? I'm going to bet that on the canadian tour, it didn't happen very often.

Ya know what, I'll do the leg work for ya... I got some procrastinating to do..... 46 shows since September. 57 songs played in that time (impressive, even for the hip).

and 17 of those songs were played at least 65% of the time.

Hundredth Meridian, Gus, NOIS, and Vaccination Scar was played at every show since september.

-Ok, so Grace, Too was skipped 15 times.... which I find odd, cause I've seen them something like 14 times and I've never not seen it... and only once saw it outside of the first 3 songs.

Even still, when you look at the statistics, there are few, if any surprises. The big singles tend to get lots of trips around the stage, as do the fan favourites..... lesser known songs, not so much.

Well, ya said ya wouldn't believe they'd do it. I just thought I'd make belief a little easier. Smile

I don't disagree, they have to promote the new stuff, they have to satisfy what people want to hear, and any rarities or lesser known old songs that come up are a treat.

- schaggs - 12-20-2004

Now that I've been listening to my '95 MLG boot, I miss the older forgotten gems like The Wherewithal. But - I have the solution. Convince TTH to do a NYE show in a field somewhere, and play for 6hours like Phish did Dec 31, 1999. Then we'd hear more than half of the catalogue in one shot.

Phish played a concert like that?! Wow....do you know what made them want to do that?

God, if the Hip ever did that....I can't even begin to imagine.....
Talk about pleasure overload.....

- schaggs - 12-20-2004

Phish even recorded and released a live show that requires 6 discs. That's easily 6 hours of music, and it wasn't even a special occasion.... sure it was full of questionable covers, but it's still 6 hours of music deemed release-worthy......

For the record, I am not a Phish head. I just consider myself a scholar in this field.

- vicariousmartyr - 12-20-2004

The Hip couldnt do that because they dont jam.

- schaggs - 12-20-2004

Maybe not, but the 6-disc Phish set contains quite a number of songs, rather than 55 minute jams of a 2 minute song.... I know NOIS, 100th, and a few others are often extended into the ten minute range, so I think it's plausible sometime... though terribly not likely.

Phish did pull off 45 songs in the show, and the longest was around 15 minutes, which is a track they were notorious for jamming for up to an hour. It's something like 40 minutes long on another live album.....

Missed opportunity indeed!
Ouch!

- schaggs - 12-21-2004

When you've got nothing to fight about it's not really combat math.

Either way, I see myself as more of a war artist.
