If there is no new material I will NOT buy it. I never bought Live Between Us because it was a smack in the face that the one live concert they release was taped in the states. I know they were trying to appeal to state side fans but come on. We are the hips fanbase up here in Canada. At least they offered up the Toronto show. These guys have really fallen behind the times in the last 5 years or so.

Really? That seems a little off the deep end to me. You passed up on a great live album because it was recorded south of the border? What difference does it make? They probably could have just as easily released any show from '96, but they felt that this one was the best. That seems to me to be a responsible and intelligent thing to do for the fans, not some ploy to reel in a whole new fan-base in the States.

I have no problem not buying the album if it's studio versions of the hits. I already have them!!! I didn't know that it was our duty as fans to go against our will just to buy whatever the Hip releases. Like I said, if there are some unreleased songs, I MIGHT think of buying it. Sorry, I don't spend money just for the sake of spending it and I feel that a collection of songs I already have on cd isn't worth my hard earned money. THe band gets next to no money from the CD's anyway so the argument that you are "supporting" the band doesn't fly.

BUT TO EACH HIS OWN! This is just my personal opinion which it looks like a small minority of fans agree with.

I would definitely NOT buy it if it didn't have any unreleased stuff. I'm surprised to hear that so many people would.

Just curious though... although I agree with the other posts in this thread that all Hip songs are hits... because, of course, we're fans and we like all of their material... but how do you think they would decide what was a "hit"? I don't think the Hip have had a #1 hit on any of the charts (Much, Billboard, etc) I could be wrong about that though.... would it just be their more popular songs? ABAC, NOIS, etc?

I believe 11 or 12 of the Hips videos have hit number one on the MuchMusic countdown, and on the Billboard charts, I think the highest one song has gotten was ABAC, at number 43, or something along those lines. As for #1 hits on the radio, The Hip have about 32 of them, the most for any Canadian rock band in history. Based on those fuzzy numbers, the Hip could release a three-disc greatest hits, with enough room for 10 or so unreleased songs. If that were the case I think most of us here would pick up a set.

The Hip should pull a U2 and release 2 Greatest Hits CDs: one for everything on Day for Night and earlier, and one for everything since Day for Night.

And then do as U2 did and include a bonus disc of rarities with each.

How many greatest hits cd's does U2 have out anyway? It seems like they release a greatest hits package every other year. Good band but probably the most overexposed band in the history of music.

Ummm...While I've argued in other threads that The Hip don't do what they do solely to make money, any business endeavor must be cost effective, if not profitable. If we stop buying concert tickets, will they continue to tour? If we stop buying CDs, will they continue to record them?

I have a passionate distaste for Clear Channel; it sickens me to put money in their pocket but my love for The Hip's live show far outweighs my disdain for a self-righteous corporate entity.

"Greatest Hits" packages are typically aimed at the new or less obsessive fans who don't already own everything ever released. Some of you may feel entitled because of past purchases, and that's unfortunate, but in order to maintain growth and popularity, every artist must continue to cultivate a larger fanbase. As long as they continue to put out great music, I don't see anything wrong with that.

I'm sorry that bauer feels that way about Live Between Us. A couple of my friends that I turned on to the Hip still have no idea that they are a "Canadian Band", only that they are a great r&r band.

Secondly, Greatest Hits are typically done for 2 reasons--to appease the record company honchos and to appeal to and cultivate new fan bases. So, buy it or don't buy it. As for me, if it's got unreleased music, I'll probably go to iTunes and download those new tunes. Something like that.
