I thought it was pretty clever back in the day.
I'm glad somebody brought up Paul. I found myself getting strange looks in Sudbury becasue I just started singing his parts at the top of my lungs about mid way through the show. How can you not when "Giftshop" hits!? Singing through my teeth and everything!
Man, I just love that guy.

It was really cool in Sudbury I was talking to Paul and saying how much i loved his singing. I asked him when we are going to see a Paul Langlois solo album and he grinned and said "Well, you're young, so you might see it." It was really funny and classy.

Back when Paul smoked, we always knew when he was going to sing, because he lit up a cigarette. We figured the clenched teeth holding the cigarette, and singing out the side of his mouth was his "sound".

I noticed that at EdgeFest and in Sudbury last week, Paul came out for the final encore with a cigarette danglin.
It seems it's a special occasion thing for him now... either that or he can just go longer without a smoke than he used to!

But seeing as we're all stuck on Leave, when it goes into 'and do you hope those earthbound poets could learn to sing as good as us' is the high point for me.
Also, just the whole creepy monotone of Gord's voice in So hard done by...it gives me chills.
And, in Membership. The chorus Gord sings near the end of the song '...carried under, carried away', but goes up an octave and brings back down for the 'carried away' part...lovely.

Always had a thing for Henhouse. The "maybe a prostitute could teach you how to take a compliment" line always gets me. I dont know if this is a proper word to describe a song but Flamenco is the smoothest thing I have ever heard. When I hear "the pendelum swings" and then boom (especially live) I just don't understand why everyone in the world isn't as big a hip fan as me. I had an Uncle pass away last week and I read some lines from Heaven is a Better Place Today at the funeral. Gord said it better than I ever could. All great stuff. I have finally found my people on this site.

There are a few that come to mind for this topic.
Firstly - During the 91 tour, just after the chorus in She Didn't Know Gordie would give an emotional "...I miss you some time..." and "...I love you some time..."
Those ones get me good.
Secondly - Sherpa, right from the first note, to the first line "...me and the vivid girl, in our hammock to the stars..." and "....we spoke long and late..." Such a gripping song, many moments in this one.
Thirdly - Most of Escape is at Hand, but particularly "...I guess I'm too slow..."
Finally - In When The Weight Comes Down, "...in my dreams a candy...." Very powerful verse.
But with any Hip discussion there are just so many different fav hip moments, tunes, lines, quotes, notes, and licks that you will get a thousand and one opinions from one thousand people. And if you include various live moments from 'west wind' to 'blurry lights than starry nights' to montreal references, your options increase tenfold.
But that's the beauty of the Hip and what they have brought to us. Embrace and enjoy folks...

Songs like Sherpa are what elevate this band to ‘genius’ status. I was initially floored by Gord’s awesome dynamic intensity, but this tune, along with Flamenco, beautifully demonstrate his tonal versatility. The composition and arrangement of songs like these exhibit the band’s mastery of texture, and Gord adapts the vocals perfectly, softening inflection and incorporating languid mood to match the literary and musical themes present in these works. Spectacular.....

Ask "Can I help you?" in that way that says "I can't"
...Nothing too outstanding. I just really thinki the line is clever. The way that Gord put into words that emotion or state of mind when you ask some idiot or someone who doesnt belong, if you can help them.
I dont think I could have put that into words so aptly if I tried for 10years!
