To quote Gordie: "You'll get your tune if you stop shouting it!"

Play killerwhale tank!!!" He did this throughout the entire show and my buddy and I just wanted to punch him. I think Gord did too. He had a look on his face like, "buddy, we're never playing that song again, so get used to it."

Good point! I agree with most of you here. The flag waving and overt patriotism seems to follow the Hip around wherever they play, and I know for a fact that it annoys them more often than not. Personally I think it's ridiculous that people feel the need to sing the national anthem at Hip shows. This is rock n' roll, people. It ain't the freakin' Olympics. The interesting thing is that there are plenty of other bands who write songs about Canada (Rheostatics, The Weakerthans, Blue Rodeo, Sam Roberts, Sarah Harmer) and you never see people waving the flag or singing the anthem at their shows. For some reason, people only do these things at Hip concerts.

when is pearl jam coming through T.O. again. They said they would be back this summer, last summer Cry

Because Pearl Jam is the Pearl Jam of Canada.

Pearl Jam fans don't bring Pearl Jam flags to Pearl Jam concerts because the majority of them hate their current president and what he's done/doing to their country.

America is completely different from Canada in the sense that we feel we constantly have to advertise our nationality whenever we get the chance, whereas Americans seem to only do so at international sporting events and when they are being threatend (9/11). Canadian's are proud of their country and I don't see what's wrong with showing it off.

I personally don't see what the big deal is as long as people aren't being obnoxious with it. Wasn't it awesome seeing The Hip at Woodstock with all of those Canadian flags in the crowd? Or how about at the Olympics the night before the men's hockey gold medal game with all Canadian flags in the audience?

Yeah, that sounds bad enough at a Hip concert but this was at a :censored Gord solo show! The jackasses knew who the Hip were but had no clue about Gord's solo stuff except for "Pascal's Submarine" which I assume they heard on the radio. It's fine if you don't know all the songs and just want to go and see Gord live to see what it's like but don't yell at him to play HIP songs! It was a Gord show, not a Hip show!

Yeah, it was cool to see the flags at Woodstock and the Olympics. I guess it's a fine line because I think these instances were cool but I think it all boils down to whether the people are obnoxious, drunk buffoons in which case they should be carried out by their jockstrap!

the fact that the hip are playing on Canada Day has a lot to say. Myself, I will be bringing a Canadian Flag. Not to be waving it at the show, but becasue it will be Canada Day, and I want to show my pride. As long as people respect others by not being stupid with the flag, I really can't see the problem with it. :thumb:

I'm wearing a Canadian Flag on june 1st....

Why?
Because It's Canada day?
no.
Because Canadian Flags and Candian Nationalism go hand in hand..
maybe, but not this time...
Becuase I want Gordie to come rip my flag away from me
Oh yeeeeeahhh

Lets see him come get it, I'll be on the lawn, so it's a good long run for him....
I will also be with 4 guys shaking Fruit Shaped Maraka's singing oh canada before the hip come on, and yelling out things like "bring out yer dead" and such during the show.

Hope to see you there.

Smile

Because Canada has 10% the population of the States...amazing bands from here are few and far between.

We are proud of the hip being a Canadian band, so we associate them with our flag..ect

- thedarkestone - 06-23-2004

I think a lot of it boils down to the fact that many Canadians have an inferiority complex when it comes to the States. You can flame me all you like for saying that, but as a Scot who has lived in Canada for some time now (don't get me wrong, I love this country) I am amazed that so many people are sooo concerned about what the Americans think about us, including the media. I think the flag waving is an extension of that, especially when it happens in the States. Das Hip are a proud Canadian commodity and some people feel the need to advertise that.

Personally, flag waving at shows doesn't bother me as long as it doesn't block my view or the flag waver isn't being obnoxious, however I always thought that flag etiquette dictated that wearing a flag as a cape, diaper, shirt, shorts, hat or whatever was quite disrepectful to the flag.

My two cents.

Canadians bring flags because when it comes to popular music, we are the minority compared to the US. When I first got into the Hip in 1992, I actually thought they were American! I assumed it. Why? I think everyone assumes that certain things just come from the US and then are amazed when they find out they are not. With Canada and the US, Canada always seems to be the underdog, so when we feel we've got something great, we let everyone know that it's Canadian, not American!
