Most Promising Group (1990)

Winner: The Tragically Hip
Other Nominees:
Brighton Rock ( They broke up in 1991 before reuniting and releasing a live album in 2002)
Indio (one album in 1989)
Paradox (broke up 1991)
Sons of Freedom (broke up 1993)

Good call I'd say.

That's awesome! There was not much competition in that category. I was looking back at past Group of the Year nominees and the Hip appeared there every time they released an album from 1992's Fully Completely to a 2010 Nomination for the previous year's WATS. The only albums that didn't garner a "Group of the Year" nomination were UTH, RA, and NFPA. They've been nominated 11 times (including this year) and have won twice (in 1995 and 1997). I've listed the years they were nominated below.

"Hey, Paul Langlois: thanks!"

I didn't watch -- can someone recap what happened with Paul?

Rob spoke for about 45 seconds thanking everyone who had been on the road with them for all of these years, down to the catering people. He then handed it over to Paul. About 20? seconds into Paul's speech the "GTFO" music started. Paul said, "oh, so you're gonna cut me off, eh?...well, we played in this building 7 months ago and we own this arena, not you." Then he kept talking, the tech team tried to save face by switching the cut-off music to ABAC. At 2:00 Paul wanted to close with mention of Gord and they shut off his microphone. Embarrassing and disrespectful.

Thank you! And thank you to Paul for confirming his ass-kickery!

Super disappointed in CTV and the Juno awards for what happened last night. Really left a sour taste in my mouth when they did that, especially just as Paul was thanking Gord...

It was a real shame given the fact that this is probably one of the last times this band got a chance like this (to win a major industry award). Fuck those producers.

Re: Juno Awards - nominations - edgoffin - 04-03-2017

I get that there are time constraints for live TV, but should have been some appreciation for the situation as possibly the last time the band will be receiving a Juno. At least Rob and Paul seemed to find it funny, especially when they switched to ABAC (which I also thought showed some sense of humor by that producer, who is likely getting an earful from another producer that they need to cut to show the Virgin ad for the 1000th time).

Gord's recorded acceptance was good -- just glad to see him looking well.

Overall on the Junos, I fast forwarded through a lot but:
* I like the way they now do this show, with less awards and more music. That said, they seem to have a real mix issue with sound on the broadcast. I do appreciate they're moving pretty quick with stage set up between acts.
* July Talk were very good. I saw them a few years ago open for Frank Turner as a then unknown band, and they were one of those "who is this band?'" revelations. Sound was not great, Leah's vocals too low, but they understand it's maybe more about "the show" with that type of exposure.
* Strumbellas -- again, I like these guys and have seen them in some pretty small rooms. Spirits is a catchy song, though they have way better in their catalogue. Simon sounded like he had some monitor issues early, or was a bit nervous, but a good visual performance.
* Arkells -- I really liked those first few records, last few have gone a bit more in a pop direction with more production which is a bit less to my taste but I still enjoy. However, these guys have become a really incredible live band -- saw them in Ottawa a few months ago, musically stellar and Max is a great front man. Like that they did Drake's Dad, possibly a bit of a shot at the no-show for Drake.

Congrats to all the big wins for those guys and good for Paul to just keep on going and to even go as far as calling them out when the music started.

The only other thing he should have done at the end of his speech would have been a *mic drop*
