I forgot the Headstones. Little Army can hold its own against the best of their material. There's no filler on that album. As for Solidarity, I think I'd put that in the bottom of third of Plaskett's releases. I saw a show on the tour he did with his dad this spring and while it was enjoyable, it never quite seemed to get lift-off. Which is pretty much how I feel about the album as well.

If any of you guys are fans of badass country-rock/Americana, then the new Steve Earle album should be right up your alley. Best thing he's done since Transcendental Blues in my opinion. All killer, no filler.

My current list:
Father John Misty -- Pure Comedy. Really like FJM, amazing live show. This came out while I was travelling and downloaded on Spotify, and was really unsure on the first few listens. Great album that gets better over time.
Whitehouse -- Panther in the Dollhouse. They're first real full band album, and it's great. I'd maybe got a bit worn out on Whitehorse, had seen them possibly too many times, but this is a strong release.
Steve Earle -- So You Wanna Be an Oulaw. Mentioned about, his best since Transcendental Blues IMO.
Jason Isbell -- Nashville Sound. I'm waiting for Jason to write a bad song.
Little Hurricane -- Same Sun, Same Moon. Great two piece from California, criminally unknown. This album (#3) is good, Gold Fever (album #2) is tops.

Also lots of crossover with others above -- Ryan Adams, Spoon, Aimee Mann all great releases. Also like the new Jenn Grant, maybe a touch ethereal with this album but she's always great live. Headstones album is alo really god beginning to end, Sunlight Kills the Stars is a great track.

I liked the Joel Plaskett/Bill Plaskett show, so-so on the album, but I also really liked the opening band (Mayhemingways).

Looking forward to new Matt Mays, curious about Arcade Fire, Foo Fighters, Alvvays, The National, Wolf Parade, War on Drugs....should be some good fall music...

I've heard so many good things about Father John Misty that I think it's about time I had a listen. Any recommendations for a starting point?

For some reason, when discovering a new artist, I like to listen to the latest and then work my way back... just a personal preference.

Pure Comedy is a great release, and as his latest, I would recommend starting there.

Fear Fun is a bit more straightforward. It was one of those debut albums -- ignoring his J Tillman releases, which add an interesting backstory that flows into the Father John Misty character he's created -- that was on constant repeat, but figured could not be replicated.

I Love You, Honeybear then topped Fear Fun. More studio production but never to the detriment of the songs. He and Jonathan Wilson (produced, played a bit on Fear Fun) really seemed to have clicked in the studio. Of the three albums, it's the most "in character" Father John Misty release, if you think Josh Tillman is playing the character like say Bowie was Ziggy.

Pure Comedy tones down a bit of the studio production, but again Wilson seems to bring out the best in Tillman (interesting both have a significant religious background, with Wilson seeming to have a more positive experience than Tillman). The opening four tracks are stunning, and the last two always make me stop and listen. It's maybe a bit long, but after repeat listens not sure what I'd cut. Leaving LA is a 13 minutes, but a really neat deconstruction of the Father John Misty character. It's a very timely album. Also made with his touring band from Honeybear, which is primarily Everest (a great LA band).

He's an interesting musician. He has a series of more earnest folk songs out as J Tillman, joins Fleet Foxes, has a breakdown and leaves. Decides to go the singer-songwriter route again, but creates this cynical, sarcastic, ID driven character as the vehicle. Pure Comedy I think he's pulling away from that character, there's a lot more "Josh Tillman" in these songs. But he still plays with that FJM "brand", especially in social media and interviews.

Based on his direction with these three albums, I think his masterpiece is still to come. Starting point...and sorry for the ramble...if you start with Pure Comedy and go backwards would be interesting de-evolution from complex to less complex. I share musical tastes with many friends, but FJM is often where we part -- not sure if it's the character that puts them off, production, etc.

Plus, go see him live. I've been blown away every time.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll be the only one in the office for several hours tonight so lots of listening time.

Re: 2017 Ass Kickers! - potsie - 09-23-2017

There's been a boatload of good new music released over the past few weeks:

The National - "Sleep Well Beast": Same old National (and that's a good thing) with some keys and electronic flourishes on top.
Deer Tick - "Deer Tick Vol. 1" and "Deer Tick Vol. 2": Double album, one acoustic, one electric, both a bit messy which is Deer Tick at their best.
War on Drugs - "A Deeper Understanding": Great album, but I haven't listened to it enough to say that it is on par with the masterpiece that was "Lost in the Dream"
Arcade Fire - "Everything Now": I tried listening, but I'm beginning to feel like I'm done with Arcade Fire, a band I loved 10 years ago. There is a certain amount of pretentiousness that surrounds them that is starting to bother me. Lyrically Win is sounding tired, as is the music.
Hiss Golden Messenger - "Hallelujah Anyhow": Some great folk tracks from an underrated artist.

Have you listened to any Will Butler? His live album is amazing!! Maybe this will make you believe there's Arcade Fire magic still to come.

I would also like to mention in this thread an album that will be a contender in my favoruite of the year, and this will be in the top 5.

I've been listening to Nicole Atkins for about 3 years now. Her first new album since the album that got me into her, 'Slow Phaser' (A masterpiece as well). After falling in love with this gal, she moved to Nashville for her next album. And let me say, I am absolutely loving the country influence on this album.

Even Robbie retweeted one of her songs! He said something something 'Great new artist!'. I messaged Nicole's facebook telling her that one of my musical heroes retweeted her - and I threw some shade at Robbie to her, because I've loved Nicole for years, and she's definitely not a new artist. She messaged me back saying she listened to Man Machine Poem very recently and loved it, and that if Robbie thinks she is 22 and this is her first album she was OK with that haha.

Anyways.... Goodnight Rhonda Lee. Just listen for yourselves.
