Re: Halfway to Completing New Album - direwolf74 - 08-24-2015

Well, here we are in late August and no announcement about a new album yet. If this thing was actually coming out this year, we likely would have heard something by now. But who knows? Ever since U2, Wilco, and Beyonce dropped new records on the public with no advanced warning, I suppose the landscape has changed somewhat when it comes to album releases. Maybe we'll all wake up tomorrow and the new Hip record will be sitting there on our iPhones.

Unfortunately, I don't think The Hip's international popularity would lend itself to label's agreeing to release a new Hip record for free.

Why so long a wait? That's almost 4 years since their last album! AAARRRRGGGGHHHHH!

Re: Halfway to Completing New Album - direwolf74 - 09-03-2015

That's likely a decision by Universal. My guess is the Hip are putting together a tour for the spring, so the label will try and time the release of the album with their touring schedule. I agree though, it's way too long of a wait. If I remember correctly, the same thing happened with NFPA where the record had been finished for months and sat on the shelf collecting dust before they finally put it out. The way I see it, why wouldn't they want to release the album by at least November and capitalize on the Christmas shopping season? It's no secret that major labels are on their last legs, and that their outdated business model doesn't work anymore. I think it's time for the Hip to jump ship and go the independent route like many of their peers have done in recent years (Wilco, Pearl Jam, Radiohead, Foo Fighters, etc..) It seems the new model these days is to release your records on your own label and then license them to a major simply for distribution purposes. This allows bands the freedom to release their records whenever they feel like it. Or in Wilco's case, as soon as it's done. Apparently their new album had only just finished being mastered a few days before they uploaded it to their website for download. Must be awesome to have that kind of freedom as an artist.

I'm good with Spring. It gives us something to look forward to all winter. Stuff will start leaking out around December. Mav will post some videos around February and next thing we know it's Hip time. Sounds good to me. I can't believe it's been nearly four years since NFPA.

Re: Halfway to Completing New Album - sean.bonner - 09-04-2015

2015 must be one of the only years since 2000 where nothing Hip related has been released (Downie solo/Country of Miracles/Sadies.... Langlois solo... Stripper's Union).

At least we had a tour where I got to check off lots of songs I've always hoped to see live.

They better keep some of those tunes in the rotation moving forward!

In addition to Rob saying on twitter that the record will be out in March, they are still working on the art work and "tour to follow."

I have only two wishes: 1) don't play arenas in Canada and 2) mix up the setlists.

Re: Halfway to Completing New Album - thebends - 10-06-2015

I don't like the arena shows much either but prefer them over field festivals, especially if you buy into the VIP cages behind the mix kiosk far away from anything that can be remotely considered important. Preference would be an extended run at something like the Phoenix in Toronto or a couple of nights at Massey Hall. Unlikely. Our go to for the last 10 years or so has been southern States shows, small intimate venues with character are always a great backdrop for a Hip show.

Re: Halfway to Completing New Album - patiodweller - 11-05-2015

What the heck is wrong with arena shows? They should have a VIP option and do it right this time regardless of venue.

When the new album comes out... On the date that it does (in March), can we all get together and plan to go on Twitter and get the hashtag #thehip trending? Who's with me?

What do you know that we don't...!? Spill yer beans!!

patiodweller Wrote:What the heck is wrong with arena shows?

Ticket prices, little if any intimacy, and hit & miss sound - much easier to mix a show in a smaller venue. Having said that I likely would not miss a Hip show if they played an arena in the Southern Ontario area.

Re: Halfway to Completing New Album - tth_fan - 11-21-2015

Perfect! I hope that small little shows follow the new album, and not a stadium tour. Kind of like when they put out World Container. I went to 4 shows in 4 nights at MacEwan Hall in Calgary (maybe 500ppl standing room) and they remain the greatest shows I've ever seen.

Re: Halfway to Completing New Album - Rye - 12-27-2015

Nothing new here? No hint on if the record is still on track to being released in March or a hint of when a tour might be happening?
