I thought Gord sounded awful. The criticism on Twitter is well deserved.

Fan or not a fan, honest reviews thus far from what I've seen.

Hi All, I just finished watching the two songs shown on TV. LEOTR and 50 Mission Cap. The only words I have right now are wow... I think this was the worst I've seen Gord Downie perform. I was hoping for a better performance. It will be interesting to hear from folks that were there what the sound was like.

I'm not so sure about spending big money on the upcoming tour now. Looking forward to hearing the thoughts of others on this board. I hope the guys can pull it together but tonight has me a little concerned.

Would love to hear from others. From what I saw - for a sing like 50MC that is not in heavy rotation - the vocals left a lot to be desired. Band sounded great though. Poor impression after they've been gone so long.

I watched the two songs and Gord sounded....well like Gord. Not much different than what he sounded like on the Bobcaygeon movie. My take is this....The band, including Gord was entertaining. His voice is really changed over the years. To come close to the melody line as it was sung on the recordings, he has to really push to get the notes out. It's just he casualty of decades of vocal abuse/passionate singing/ranting...etc. I've said it before on here... I don't think the Hip should do the live broadcast thing anymore. The mix isolates and compresses Gords vocals too much. People at the venue probably didn't really notice or care because the band as a whole is rockin, the lights, the visuals, the bass kind of take over and make it appealing.... I'm being over-analectic lol.....aren't we all on here?

Transpose the tunes down into a key he can sing. Something. Pretty much no way I'm buying tickets for this tour.

I don't know why people here just started noticing Gord's screaming in the last couple years. I thought the 2004 Grey Cup appearance was awful, the DVD from Toronto the same year has lots of screaming through songs, and the Live 8 performance in 2005 was also bad.

Just got home from the show and this is the setlist form what I can remember:

Grace, Too
Fully Completely
Man Machine Poem
The Lonely End of the Rink
Fifty Mission Cap
Bobcaygeon
We Want To Be It
In View
Heaven Is a Better Place Today
Courage

Not sure how it sounded on TV, but the band sounded fine live. The crowd was a mix of casual hockey fans and die hard Hip fans, so it might have seemed like a lot of people weren't familiar with the less recognizable material.

Some quotes from the Flames fan site Calgarypuck.com in regards to the Hip's performance:

"To be clear, I'm a huge Hip fan, but this is a shell of the man I grew up worshipping. If I sounded like that I would stop playing live, or do like Joni Mitchell and sing my songs a full octave lower."

"I haven't seen the Hip play in forever, but what the hell happened to Gord Downie's voice? He was never the greatest singer, but this is awful."

"That was painful to watch."

"Wow, this is really bad."

"That was one of the worst things I've seen. So uncomfortable."

I'd say that about sums up Gord's performance this evening. As a fan, it's really hard to watch him struggle like that and hear that kind of reaction from viewers. But they're right. He was terrible.

Re: October 8 - The "Stay Tuned" News!! - hurls15 - 10-08-2014

Twitter was merciless. And it was easy to follow along with all the negative twitter buzz right from the new Hip app. Ouch.

I think that the saddest part was that even after separating out the non-fans that dislike the band and feel the need to state their preference, there were soooo many tweets from casual/one time fans that haven't heard them in a while and were really shocked and disappointed in the significant vocal deterioration. There is no doubt in my mind that this performance tonight will have lost them some casual ticket buyers for the upcoming tour.

I have been firmly in the "he could sing if he wanted to camp" over the last 5 years. I am sadly moving over to the "his vocal cords have been torched and he can only sing live in a very limited range".

The Hip's relevancy is over. They had a good run. They are a parody of themselves at this point.

As a live band, yes, I'm inclined to agree. As a studio band, no. These guys are still excellent songwriters. I really enjoyed the last record, and I'm looking forward to the next one. But I think I'm done with seeing them live, especially after tonight's embarrassing performance.

Re: October 8 - The "Stay Tuned" News!! - pars9393 - 10-08-2014

all he had to ever do was just change things up a little bit with his singing. he took it too far and this performance put them in the spotlight and now he is getting eaten up on twitter!!

Re: October 8 - The "Stay Tuned" News!! - SRK - 10-09-2014

What's incredibly frustrating is that as little as a month ago, I saw him singing reasonably well. I don't understand what it is about assuming the mantle of "Tragically Hip frontman" that makes him want to blow out his voice all of a sudden. (by which I mean over the last five years.)

I"m going to go out on a limb and say that he is unconcerned with Twitter Backlash.
