I've been to 7 shows since 2002 (including 4 in 2009), and the only song I've heard from IVL in that time is "It's a Good Life". I would love to hear Dire Wolf, or any other song on that album really.
I guess that makes me fortunate... I've seen The Dire Wolf, The Dark Canuck and Throwing Off Glass (in addition to weaken as well).

I want to point out that The Darkest One hasn't been played since SkyDome 2003 and Silver Jet hasn't been played since Toronto IBE 04 (That Night In Toronto).

Whoever's writing the setlists--Baker, Sinclair, whoever--needs to do a better job of mixing it up, especially if they're going to justify charging upwards of $140 a seat for the forthcoming tour. The band knows there are people like us who've seen them dozens of times; I get playing the greatest hits for the transient members of the audience, but a couple bones for the diehards isn't a lot to ask. I'm sure it's been said--I'm sure I've said it myself--but Pearl Jam finds a way. And yeah, they've got way more of a diehard following than the Hip...but still.

HAVING SAID ALL THIS. I was at the Fort Calgary show in July, which was about as paint-by-numbers a setlist as I've ever seen the Hip play. It was a phenomenal show; the band was on fire, and if they mailed in the setlist-making portion of the evening they certainly didn't mail in the performance itself. Given a preference every single one of us would rather see a mediocre setlist performed brilliantly than a brilliant setlist performed...uh, is mediocrely a word? (Apparently not.) Ultimately, if they mix things up like they did on their last arena tour I'll be as happy as a setlist grouch like me is ever likely to be. Wink

I won't complain about "Silver Jet" disappearing from setlists... Wink

But I was at both those shows, plus a couple in 2002. I've heard most of IVL; just missing "Throwing Off Glass," "Leave," and "The Dark Canuck" (which I would've heard in Calgary 2009 had I not sold my tickets to the second show). I wish "The Dire Wolf" would get the occasional airing: I think that song's masterful.

They really do, and I adore Pearl Jam because of that reason. And that's not to say the Hip haven't done a good job of mixing it up over the years. But Pearl Jam takes it to another level...like their three night stand in Boston a couple years ago where they played every song they've ever recorded. I really like what Vedder said in the PJ20 documentary, and I'm paraphrasing here, but he said something like: "if we wanted to, we could probably just play the hits and play the same set every night. But I just can't bring myself to do that."

Not every band can be Pearl Jam; hell, not every band should be Pearl Jam. But they really are the standard-bearers when it comes to appealing both to casual fans and to the idiots like me who see them multiple times each tour/name their dogs Eddie. I'm coming to accept that the Hip won't ever mix things up like some of us would like--but I also think there's a happy medium, and to me it'd look a bit like the 2007 tour. I saw four shows that tour; yeah, there was lots of repetition, but there also tended to be a couple surprises each night (like "Scared" in Thunder Bay--that was awesome). And the covers were a nice touch; actually, it'd be cool if they brought that conceit back.

I agree the '07 tour was excellent. I saw them in Seattle on that tour, and they pulled out The Dire Wolf, Membership, Lake Fever, and Fire in the Hole. Amazing show. They also mixed things up quite nicely on the '09 tour.

To be fair, how many acts out there today even do ANY song rotation at all? The bands with the big productions pretty much have to stick to a set song list for a tour. if I was a musician that would bore me to no end. I know Rush pretty much as the same song list on each tour. Mark Knopfler was always good at pulling out back of the record gems on his concerts.

Pearl Jam and Bruce Springsteen are at the top of the list of what is capable from an veteran band. Obviously, PJ & BS play completely different, marathon sets night after night. They do it for themselves as much as for the fans. Bands like REM, Death Cab For Cutie, BNL (in their pre-Page departure days) and Cheap Trick have always embraced their back catalogs and rarer songs. A band like Rush is at the other end of the spectrum, sticking to the exact same setlist night after night for various reasons (material is difficult, geddy can no longer sing anything pre 1983, huge stage production). Depending on the tour, The Hip have done some very interesting things and have been fairly diverse. Maybe not as diverse as PJ and BS but certainly in line with the others mentioned (before Rush). I think the true issue with the Hip as of the past couple years has been simply they're playing less songs. I used Tragically Hip setlists that I have seen (17 since 98) to practice my "excel" skills a few days ago. Lots of interesting things when you look at them side by side! BUT....The main problem with the past couple years has been way less songs than any tour going back to the early 90's.

What I would hope for is something like the 07 tour (some rotating gems and covers, good mix of old and new, not all singles) but I suspect we will get more like the 04 tour (lots of the current album...which will be terrific but only a non-single song once in a while and a solid mix of hits)...

and....btw I am a musician in a band and we switch up big time every gig.... could never play the same sets...HOWEVER I haven't sold 8 million in albums either (and have fan expectations)....

my two cents :thumb:

Re: Setlist Problem and Upcoming Tour Setlists - emperor penguin - 10-17-2012

Even though Rush plays the same setlist for the duration of an entire tour (because every song corresponds to a video on the screen behind them that is synchronized with their phenomenal light show) they vary their setlists pretty well tour to tour. The even played all of Moving Pictures last tour. You think the Hip would ever play the entirety of Day for Night or Fully Completely during a tour? I doubt it, even though it would be a smash hit amongst casual old school fans and die hards. You go to a Rush show and know exactly what they're playing. You go to a Hip show, and until recently, expect some variation. They don't have elaborate video's with Jerry Stiller and Joe Flaherty, so synching their setlist with their background video's can't be used as an excuse. Rush also plays for 2.5 - 3 hours.

The 2007 setlists were ok. Pretty repetitious with maybe 1 or 2 semi rare ones thrown into the encore and a cover (which they would have been better served replacing with one of their own rare gems). The 2009 setlists were much, much better, but I doubt we'll see anything close to that with an opening band and therefore a shorter setlist to work with, as well as being an arena tour.

I get why people see this complaining as whining. I'm not losing sleep over any of this, I just probably won't be going to any shows this tour. I can't afford it, and I don't place the same value on the product as what is being charged for it. It's as simple as that. Same reason, as a diehard Rush fan, I chose not to pay 150 bucks to see them at the ACC and haven't seen them since 2007.

I'd also like to point out that My Morning Jacket has one of the best light shows I've ever seen, they charge an incredibly reasonable price for their shows, and their setlists are virually indistinguishable night to night. Aside from certain songs from their newest album, absolutely every other song is different and this goes in runs of 4 shows. Their last tour even had a thing where you could tweet them prior to the show and they'd select a couple to add to the setlist that day. They were pulling out songs that would be akin to the Hip playing stuff from the EP. The amount of energy exhibited by Jim James on stage is equal to, if not more than, Gordie.

I know a guy....well, this guy is an LD aka Lighting Director. He is really good at what he does and works for some big bands. I asked him about the Hips seeming reluctance to change up set lists. He says it is pretty much the industry standard to keep the same sets because of the lighting and audio cues. As a matter of fact he left the Cee Lo Green tour partially because of the ever changing sets.

Re: Setlist Problem and Upcoming Tour Setlists - jgardz - 10-17-2012

The hip don't have much production going on, and their light show...um, is about as basic as it gets. Lighting and audio cues are non-existent basically, so that's no real reason. I'm guessing its more to do with minimal rehearsals, and not being willing to deliver halfassed performances. It's the idea of doing less, but doing it well as opposed to doing more but not doing it all that well.
