I used to always think that they didn't recreate themselves enough from album to album, and I can remember a good 8-10 years ago people complaining on a.m.t-h that the albums failed to capture the feel of the band's live performances. I thought they did better with that on IVL and IBE, and I was not enthusiastic when I found out that Bob Rock would be their new producer. However, despite all the bells and whistles in his production, I think he has done a fine job of making the albums more dynamic and capturing more of the energy that the band has on stage. I would prefer to see some of the slicker stuff toned down on the next release, but for the most part I think it has been a positive shift.

Wow, have to disagree there. M@W is the only Hip release that is not on my iPod (the EP included). When that record came out I feared the Hip had stagnated completely.

Completely agree, that would be one badass record. Im sure even Big Sugar fans would take a peek....i got the chance to talk to Joel Plaskett about his latest album and Gordie. He's apparently got quite "the ear". Based On Johnson's track record, i would have to agree.. :thumb:

WC and WATS are no doubt near and dear to me. If there is ever another CD would like to see another producer on it. Just curiosity to hear what is on their musical minds.

Go ahead get mad at me, fine, but in my opinion, they have a taken a step backwards since Mr. Rock put his hands in their creativity and the art has suffered, and I wish he’d just leave them alone and let them do there thing. Now, let me get back to work and throw on Trouble at the Henhouse!! HAHA

First of all, do not speak for fellow Hip Fans. Second, when was the last show you were at??? Their energy and ability to push the envelope has not gone away! And as for live shows.....they get better and better every time! (I have 20 personally to compare). I look forward to what they will come up with next. And if they CHOOSE Bob Rock than that's their choice!
It also saddens me that after 15 years you want to get off the ride...so why join now? Btw, you misspelled course! LOL!!! Smile

While some fans might not like Bob Rock, it appears that the artists themselves do. I saw Ron Sexsmith on New Years who said he was in the studio working on his new album with Bob Rock. At first I wouldn't have been sold on a Ron/Bob pairing, but given what I've heard on WATS, I think this will be good for Ron and I'm looking forward to the album.

Anyway, nobody's forcing you to buy an album if you don't like the dude who produced it. But its a shame that you can't grow with the artist as they evolve and choose to work with different people. In the end, its still their lyrics and their music underneath it all.

I think what we might think of Bob Rock is irrelevant.

Isn't what's important is that the band continues to make music? The band members clearly, CLEARLY, have struck up a very strong bond with Bob Rock, reinvigorated themselves, and are excited about the music they are making.

If a producer helps the band find more/new energies and creative drive then, well, we as fans should be happy for that, no?

We dont need your 34405465793457946 layers on one track and as far as I am concerned, neither do the Hip. It is understood that the Hip want to progress with their music, but becoming more mainstream does not make a band stand out. Please leave, and never come back....

Yes Yes Yes... I wish the entire WATS album had the flavor of Morning Moon (minus the production). I always thought the Hip were closer to Blue Rodeo and the Jayhawks than official "Arena Rockers"!! Then again I am american...lol. :thumb:

I don't pretend to have been in the studio, but I think that Bob Rock's influence is much more pronounced on the last two CDs than you might think. Sure, he's not holding a gun to Rob's head and telling him what to play, but in all likelyhood, he has a lot of influence on what bits of guitar get onto the record. If he doesn't like something Rob plays, he can say, "Look, can you rework that part with something less distracting?" Or he can suggest that maybe guitar isn't the right instrument for that part and instead there should be a big buzzy synth or an orchestra.

That's just guitar. I'm sure he has his fingers in everything from the early songwriting to the sound effects.

I remember Gord saying something to the effect that Bob Rock is the first "real" producer they've had. I took that to mean that he's the first producer that the hip allowed to take the reigns a little more firmly. You can certainly hear it on the albums.

That said, I liked the last two albums. There are certainly a lot of great moments, if you can hear them under the orchestra. I think working with Bob Rock at least reinvigorated the hip, but I think they need to take the training wheels off again.
