Canadian Idol is cheese.
I think the bigger question is how did the Hip ever pull off a relationship with Jake Gold? I just can't picture Bake's sitting having a beer with Jake fucking Gold.
Mind you they did have their best efforts (from a classic rock standpoint) with Don Smith. Which just so happened to be during Jake's term of leadership(?)
I will give Sass Jordan some props for mentioning the Odds as one of her favourites. Plus there is something sexy about her, even if her music does suck.

Sarah Polly sang Courage in the Sweet Hereafter.
If the Weakerthans covered Fiddler's Green, I'd like to hear it. You may have confused them with the Stereophonics.
The Trews have broken into Meridian on more than one occasion. But then again, it's the Trews -- what haven't they covered.
As for the Idol shows, I know two people who tried out this year who should have made it to Toronto. Would they have made it this far? Probably not, but their consensus was that the judges were jackasses and total dicks. Not dicks in the way they come across on television, but legitimate dicks - people you kind of want to punch in the face. And after meeting Jake Gold once, I can totally agree with that.
Also, with the Hip's song being played, Little Bones is actually somewhat of an interesting choice. I vaguely remember reading somewhere (maybe around the time of IVL and when they left The Management Trust) about them not having ownership of a portion of their catalogue (maybe EP->DFN). This may require some googling.
Cheers,
Pat

I was just thinking the same thing. Here's the Stereophonics' version:

I've never heard that version before... if anyone has it, please post it! I love the Headstones.

Jake Gold is so desperate for praise. He lets everyone know that he was in the studio when Little Bones was recorded, then the next singer does That Song and he mentions that he was the Executuve Producer for Big Wreck's first album. I'm surprised, when Mookie sang Magic Carpet Ride, that Jake didn't tell us that he was IN Steppenwolf.

Geez, I thought that I was the negative one on here. :nooooo First of all, Gord's voice has sounded fine every time I've seen him live. Secondly, Gord's yelling still sounds a gazillion times better than the warbling garbage that Earl was spewing. Gord trashed a beautiful song? I don't think so, I don't think so at all. Gord is the last guy in the band that people should be criticizing when it comes to live Hip performances.
So, is that meant to imply that the other band members are / may be deserving of criticism regarding their live performance? Just curious.
I don't want to be negative, but I gotta agree with what Phantom51 said. I don't know to what extent this has been talked about here, but Gord D's new vocal "style" (I use that term very loosely here) is, in my opinion, ruining the Hip live experience. Every boot I've heard since the release of IBE has him taking a radically altered approach to vocals than he did during IVL and further back. The change is not a good thing. He sounds very nasal, he screams and snarls alot, and quite frankly at times it's questionable whether what he's doing can even be classified as singing. It's just awful. When I go to thehip.com every morning to listen to the SOTD, if it's post-2002, I don't even bother because it's just depressing.
The rest of the band, on the other hand, continue to perform superbly. Those late 2004 shows the band released online have some gorgeous renditions musically of songs, only to have Gord's vocals practically destroy them. I find it odd that your feeling is that he is the last one in the band deserving of criticism - in my book, he's the ONLY one.

Agreed, and I have to wonder what the other band members think about this. It is not a way to grow a larger fan base, although I wonder if they are still tyring to do that at all nowadays. They make their money by touring now and for the most part it is the same people that go each time.
I'm not trying to be negative, but I guess it sounds that way. Sorry.

I wasn't even going to click on the YouTube link to listen to the song but I finally caved and just as I suspected there are no words to describe how god awful that was. It was an absolute flop.
The problem with these "everybody show up and sing" talent shows is that the vast majority of people just don't have the balls to tell somebody that they aren't that good. If people expressed their true feelings, dare I say it, like a Simon Cowell, you wouldn't have to subject your ears to this swill.
Judges and friends alike need to be more like Jim Carrey in Liar Liar and just be brutal when it comes to critiquing talent, else you end up with people thinking that they can actually sing, just like this knob.
Shame on all of you for watching this show in the firstplace. (unless your wife/girlfriend is holding your sex life hostage by making you sit there and watch)

Fine, I'll just come out and say it-- GORD IS THE MOST IMPORTANT MEMBER OF THE BAND, BY FAR. I know a lot of people on here don't want to admit it, but it's the truth. Gord is the star of the band and the main attraction, by far. I like the entire band, but I'm not gonna be politically correct here. Gord is a superstar. The rest of the band is comprised of solid musicians who complement Gord very well, but Gord is Gord.
You find Gord to be the one ruining the songs? I guess you don't notice some of the ridiculous mistakes by the rest of the band. I remember hearing "A Beautiful Thing" a while back as SOTD and Robby butchered the guitar so bad the song was hardly recognizable.
Gord is the one people go to see when The Hip perform live. Gord is the one who has people eating from his hands. Gord is the one who connects with the crowd the most. Gord is the one who can play with a guy like Dale Morningstar and STILL be brilliant. Gord is the only guy in the band who has made a GREAT side project album.
Gord doesn't ruin anything. Not even close. The worst thing you could say about him is that he forgets lyrics all the time but when listening to the band live, missed lyrics are hardly enough to take away from the awesome experience of hearing Gord take over a show and have everyone's eyes glued to him.

That might be taking things a little too far. The Dinner Is Ruined is unbelievable live. The chemistry between Moringstar and Dave Clark is mindblowing.
The band has often referred to itself as a five-headed monster. It's how I like to view them as well. People are drawn to the lead singer naturally. It is only the incredibly rare occurrence where people would be able to name the guitarist before the lead singer (ACDC, Motorhead, etc).
I doubt anyone who would be coming to the show solely for GD isn't paying the ticket price to get through the gate. That's the kind of fan my mom is, the kind who only likes the Hip when "that jackass is singing about the whale." Sure, I'm taking notes about what he's ranting about, but as my pages of notes have gotten smaller and smaller over the past two tours, it doesn't take away from the experience in general (Belleville excluded -- there was just something off about that show).
Best band flub I've heard is the trainwreck that was Suspicious Minds in Vegas last year.
But best lead singer turning a song into a trainwreck -- well, GD has nothing on Dave Matthews. As much as a dirty word DMB is around here, their tour this year is one for the books. 3/4 done and they've pulled out 80 different songs, and have been really fucking around on stage in the best of ways. Anyway, they brought back Halloween last week... and well, if you're a member of Antsmarching, an MP3 is floating around. The band is spot on, but wow, it's a painful listen.

I'll take Gord with laryngitis over Dave Matthews, any day.
The Hip are great as a five headed beast of a musical unit, but Gord is still the lead guy and the star. Let me put it this way-- Gord has the best chance of making it if The Hip were to ever break up. Gord Downie is truly one of the great lead singers of modern times. He's got the "it" factor that all those wannable karaoke hacks on CI can only dream of.
Aw, what the hell.....maybe I'm being too harsh on the rest of the band. Gord still has sounded fine to me, though, every time I've seen The Hip.

I'm sure the band makes mistakes playing their instruments. They're human and fallible, and they all would happily admit that. Great that you cite a SOTD as an example of Robby flubbing his part, since that particular source of music has solidified my opinion as well. I'm sure there are other SOTD samples where similar gaffes have happened.
But a botched tune from time to time isn't exactly what I'm talking about here. Gord's vocals have undergone a wholesale overhaul in style. Take just about any performance of just about any song and compare a pre-IBE performance of it to a post-IBE performance of it, and you'll see (hear) what I mean. The video of the week of IAGLIYDW is a *perfect* example. I'm not talking about a tune here, a tune there every third show or anything. I'm talking *practically all the time.* I'm not imagining this. He is singing differently.
Whether it has a detrimental effect on the shows, well fortunately, that's entirely a matter of opinion. For me, an observer from the context of live recordings and not in-person concerts, it absolutely does. As I mentioned elsewhere, if the SOTD is pre-IBE release, I skip it. It's simply painful to listen to, and not on a musical level whatsoever - strictly a vocal level.

I'll back you on this.
I know what you're talking about without even listening to examples. I think this live-vocal "metamorphasis" has actually occurred in a couple different phases. I first noticed a difference in the tonal quality of his voice during live performances through the TATH / PP era -- it was a difference that seemed to be rooted in technique, as if he was taking steps to reduce the strain on his cords. I certainly can't wax technical on the specifics of those vocal performances, but it seemed that he was "emphasizing" (or utilizing) the lungs more than he previously had. And then around the time of IVL, he seemed to take it a step further.
While I've noticed some differences over time, it hasn't bothered me. I've always appreciated how hard he "got after it", and continues to get after it after all these years. I'm sure that thousands of maniacal, balls-to-the-wall performances have done quite the job on his vocal cords. They're probably half-shredded in there.
