Yep, that Sean Avery sure could teach people a thing or two about sportsmanship, all right. Yup, it's just the Olympics where you see bad sportsmanship. And lip synching.
Where did I say that there was sportsmanship in hockey, oh wise one? :what
Yep, you're right, the NHL is thought of on a global level the same as the Olympics. Good call, dog. :rambo:

I guess it all depends where you look, Tiger. Here's a fine example from the last Olympics in Athens:

Athens was four years ago.

But we don't see you declaring that the NHL sucks, and is a worthless waste of time, and that the likes of Sean Avery just go to show that this is true, do we?
No, you reserve your attitude for amateur sports.

The Americans were too busy fixing their drug tests to have a real shot at beating out the Belarusian badminton player to that discarded medal.
Canada should never beat itself up over low medal totals in the Summer Olympics. It's clearly not where our strengths lie. The Winter Olympics has always been and will continue to be where the bulk of our Olympic success comes from.

Actually Canada's summer Olympic medal count is much higher than its Winter Olympic take:
Canada Total Summer Medals: 242
Canada Total Winter Medals: 119

That's pretty misleading. Not only have there been 9 more summer games than winter games, there's also far more events in the summer games (in Beijing there are 302 medal events compared to 84 in Torino in 2006). Take a look at the recent history: Canadians had 24 medals in Torino (finished 3rd overall in total medals), compared to 12 in Athens.

Thanks Grimes..I figured that would be pretty obvious but apparently it wasn't. It really isn't close when you put it into perspective like your numbers show.

Our relations with China were nearly broken at the plate.
A near-brawl with our Olympic hosts in a baseball game won 9-1 by the U.S. team Monday night resulted in an unexpected outbreak of tension for the international pastime.
Three members of China's team were ejected from the game.
Two collisions at home plate led to an injury to a Chinese catcher and a confrontation with another.
An American player was then hit in the head with a pitch. He was rushed to a hospital, where he was diagnosed with a concussion.
"That was the last straw," said U.S. center fielder Nate Schierholtz, another of the principals.
I think it was a giant mistake to allow the Chinese to host the Olympic Games. They have behaved dishonorably from start to finish. I do not blame the Chines athletes I blame the Chinese state and the IOC for awarding them the games.

Not surprising.
I couldn't control my Chinese pitch either, so I developed a sinker.

I think it was awarded to them by the other countries in an attempt to expose their atrocities to the rest of the world on a wide scale. China has done a pretty good job of quelling any bad press (blocking websites, kicking protesters out of the country, blocking media access etc.) but the smoke and mirrors show that has been this Olympics should not be enough to sway anyone's perception and opinion of the country.
Re: The Olympics -
skippy the wonder dog - 08-19-2008
Awarding the games to China was a gross mistake.
The IOC protests that the games should be apolitical; very well, then, let's not hold them in countries that will become lightning rods for protest.
It's a no-brainer.
As for the rest, this games is a superpower showdown between the US and China ... just like the good old Cold War. Look at the medal standings, and it's not hard to figure out which two countries fund and support amateur sport as a means of demonstrating their supremacy....

Most Golds or Most Medals to determine the winning Olympic country....what is more reflective??? Discuss.
My guess is that all you Yanks will go with the "Most Medals" option.

Wow, dude your totally right. How did you do that? It seems to make sense to me. It's about group achievement right? Is it really a national perspective?
That's crazy.

Just when I was admiring the fact that these Olympics weren't drug riddled and had not become completely political, I find out they are getting rid of Baseball and they have and are keeping "sports" such as Race Walking and BMX Racing.
Are you freaking kidding me?
