Not such a surprise, if you take into account CM&V's earlier statement that CBC offered one third what another bidder had offered for all rights. Makes you wonder what she got for it. CBC made a "high six-figure" offer, since rounded up by sloppy journalists to $1 million. So it looks like about $2.5 million, if we take everyone at face value.
The tune's a hot property, instantly recognized by anyone who watches hockey, so it does make sense for CTV to buy it. I'm not sure it's worth the price, though, for all rights.
What a comedy of errors at CBC. And the timing of CTV's announcement, which shows up the CBC's last attempt for what it was, desperation....

pretty much par for the course for tsn and ctv in general...just take what
others have had success with and buy it. kinda sad if you ask me.

They didn't so much "save" it as they "pounced on" it before CBC had second thoughts. Obviously no one at CBC realized they had competition for it until it was too late; if they had they might have been a bit more generous at the negotiating table last week.

I'm glad TSN/RDS picked it up. They've proven themselves to be more competent than CBC for sports anyway. I'm also glad they have the olympics.
I know its just a song, but it is a piece of Canadiana. It'll be nice to be able to hear it; especially during the winter Olympics. The CBC sure dropped the ball on this one (and the Olympics). Might be time for major changes over there (in their defense though, the Tories don't provide them with as much funding as in the past. Harper has said before he doesn't care much for the CBC).

Funding or no funding there's no way they could have matched it...

People are going to get sick of that song, instead of hearing it once a week you will be hearing 3-4 time a week during the season or more.
