When you say "everyone", who are you referring to? I'm the only person in this thread that even responded to it.
I was wondering that myself.. "everyone"

That's what you in the industry call "Bluble".

Blue eyed soul-

Moniker used to describe white people who try their best to sound Black when they sing or in their style of music.

Very few, however have ever succeeded in pulling this off(the exception being artists like Teena Marie, Hall and Oates). Most end up sounding like they're singing falsetto and sounding over enunciated (Joss Stone, Rick Astley, etc).

Every year, Ebony magazine feels compelled to put out an article on Blue eyed soul or how white people are stealing the blues.

Let's try to edit that entry into something a little more factual.

Blue eyed soul-

Inherently racist term for music of black idioms performed by whites, based on the assumption that white people are incapable of expressing emotion freely.

Every year, Ebony magazine feels compelled to put out a racially charged rant on Blue eyed soul or how white people are stealing the blues.

Such articles fail to note, of course, the strong influence of European music on the development of forms such as blues and jazz, or the interchange of ideas between early blues and country music.

Those with a grip on the history of American popular music would be familiar with Frank Hutchinson, for example, a white blues player of the 1930s, or with Mississippi John Hurt, a black bluesman who cited Jimmy Rodgers as his major musical influence. More recently, the Carolina Chocolate Drops, a roots-music group made up of black musicians, has attempted to reclaim the tradition of black American fiddle music, which is written off by dolts such as writers for Ebony magazine and contributors to the Urban Dictionary as racist white hillbilly music.

It was only with the rise of rock n'roll in the 1950s that a "black" music came to be seen as more emotionally honest or valid than "white" music.

Well done Skippy!

Yes it was a stupid generalization but I will stand by it.

I assure you I am more than familiar with the origins and history of "modern" music. Your suggestion that the concept of blue eyed soul is racist is false. Go ahead and wikipedia it if you doubt me. My statement was not about emotion but about the vocal styling of soul music. As I said Joe Cocker was one of the first white musicians to "cross over" with the blue eyed soul genre.

I'm saying that white people have a hard time SINGING soul music. Many white musicians fill the ranks of legendary rhythm and blues men. The difficultly is the singing.

Case in point.

Great bass work from Cliff there.

It is one thing to deride someone's singing as "blue-eyed soul" because it fails; it's quite another to suggest that this is a problem with white performers in general. That is, in fact, racist, as is the complaint that white people are stealing the blues.

Were I to suggest that black concert violinists have difficulty approaching Mozart because they're black, on the basis of a small number of examples, I would be pilloried, and rightly so.

Because its fucking awesome

- NegPhil - 04-14-2008

It's unfortunate you have taken my statement and turned it into an indictment of black people. It's easy for you to call me a racist and ramble on about Mozart. The fact is your wrong. The term is not racist simply because it recognises race.

For the record I was the only person to post a Soul Band in this thread. If you take a look at my early post of "Booker T and the M-G's" you will see none other then Soul icon Wax Records legendary house band.

My intention was to explain the history and relevance of that Joe Cocker performance.

I remembered and dug up this interview of "Blue Eyed Soul" legend Bill Medly addressing the term Blue eyed soul.

The question @ 3 min.

You should be doing communications for Dubya -- that response is about at the level of "why do you hate democracy?"

I have not said a single thing about black people, in general. If I had, you'd be able to quote me.

I have taken your statement and turned it into an indictment of your statement -- "the white man has to struggle to find his 'soul'" -- and of the assumptions it represents.
