Try being a RUSH fan too, SAME setlist EVERY night...SAME.....SAME....SAME...
At least with the Hip we can expect something different..
Or a Neil Young fan, or any number of Pop acts that are touring right now, or just about any other band.
We've got it pretty good by comparison.
My thoughts exactly.

I to have been too many shows...pretty much seen it all...and I still can't muster up a complaint...
I don't get people that don't get the current shows/setlists. Is World Container not your almost favourite hip cd ever?? The songs on that cd are why I go to the shows. Sure they are going to play Springtime and NOIS at lot of shows but those are for the people who don't go to multiple shows.
Do I wish they would mix it up more? Always.
Do I beleive that the shows are still worth chasing down? Absolutely 100%.
They mix it up just enough to keep me interested and I am never disappointed, mostly cause of those great new songs
Face ticket price for Rochester was $30. It was a small venue.
Think about that...

sporty Wrote:ok. I would never complain about a band supporting their new album. they can play the whole thing for all I care. Its when they play wheat kings then the next night they play scared then the next night wheat kings. spice it up a bit. and as for them being tired, not buying that. they schedule the tour around themselves. in case nobody has notice they tour for a month then take a couple weeks off. thats them resting. I'm not saying they aren't fantastic live. I would never have seen them so many times. I just found myself predicting setlists after a while. When I met them in Buffalo ealier this year at an instore I asked them to play Opiated at the second Buffalo show and they all laughed. I got fireworks instead. Yayyyyy. I don't buy the being tired deal. still a fan, just won't travel to catch the same show as the night before or two nights before.
You ever stop and think that they have a certain amount of songs they rotate and practice through on this tour, and Opiated isn't one of them? They probably played Opiated dozens and dozens of times in the early '90's. Maybe it doesn't mean much to them anymore playing it live. Elton John didn't play "Your Song" for years at one point, because he had overplayed it, and he admitted he was just going through the motions on the song, and he hated that. So he stopped, and he began playing it again on his "Captain and the Kid" tour.

It's funny how opinions can differ. This was my 15th hip show and I though it was an excellent show. Not the best I've seen but very good nonetheless. My wife who is not much of a fan has now seen them 5 times and said this was the best show she had ever seen. I'm sure most casual fans thought this was an amazing experience cause they played the songs that they know. It's totally subjective.

And they're not tired of playing
NOIS ?
ABAC?
BOBC?
Meridian?
Giftshop?
Springtime?
Fireworks?
Poets?
Courage?
C'mon, they haven't played tons of songs in many years, or if they have it's been once. So burnt out on playing Opiated? No Fuckin Way!
The only answers could be they don't like those songs anymore or they CAN'T play them and I don't believe that they can't play them.
Also I don't think WC is like their greatest cd like ever!

Jam bands play different music every night because the like to jam. The songs are secondary. Personally that's why I don't listen to them.
The hip have songs that people want to hear. At this point they probably have 25 or so songs that a lot of people are really attached to. If they didn't play them people would be pissed.
This is why they need to play a Hipbase gig. They can give us die- hard fans all the wicked shit we never get to hear.

No matter how many times i roll my eyes hearing boots or album versions of NOIS and Courage, when I pick up my guitar and play them i have a ball. I can see how the boys get off playing them everynight. But from a fans perspective its one thing to look at the setlist and think "oh, didn't see (insert song) coming  )" and another thing to hear it live. Everytime i hear the intro to Blow, NOIS, Meridian, Yada Yada Yadda... i squeel like a little girl

A valid point
I still get thrilled at seeing the greatest hits as much as I do the suprises
If people are getting upset about the setlist then I think they need to find another band to see, or see TTH less often.
100th Merdian is still one of the best live songs, ever.

There *are* a few songs on the setlist that I would be thrilled if they never played again, namely fireworks and springtime in vienna. That said, for a few years I went to shows really wanting to hear Locked in the trunk of a car and as the show went on, I'd get more and more annoyed ("damnit, not wheat kings *again*! Sonofabitch, I've heard Grace too 10 times already!") I finally got locked last fall in montreal, and when I went to see them here in Ottawa in February, it was nice to just go and not worry about the setlist. Might've been the first time I ever enjoyed 'ahead by a century'...but I still took a pissbreak during 'springtime'...
I know I had a point there, but damned if I can remember what it was.

You mean you don't absolutely dig Henhouse?? I don't get that at all...

Setlist complaints are futile. Some bands mix it up and some don't, but in the end you pays your money and you takes your chances with every single show.
Only two things can make you walk away disappointed: a truly incompetent performance, which I've never heard of from the Hip, or your own expectations.
One of those things the band can't do nuthin' about, but you can.

just as an fyi for all those that would like springtime to be removed from sets...gord has said its his favorite song to play live (on a video interview they had on their site), so I wouldn't count on that one being taken out anytime soon.

Henhouse is a great album with a lot of great songs, that rarely get played, just like all of their albums.
I don't know for sure but I don't think anyone was complaining about them playing World Container tracks, but while we're on this topic, I enjoyed the beginning of the tour more where other World Container tracks got some rotation.
Like Skippy said, complaining about the setlists is futile, they just don't change it up like they used too and that's that. I'm well aware that a large portion of the audiences are there to hear the hits. That's why I'm choosing to not go to every show possible anymore, if they do more club shows in Canada where they are for the "die hards" I'll go because I know there will be something different.
Like I said in my original post, it's my own fault for going to all these shows, in the future it won't be an issue.
Take a break -
jodisoko - 11-05-2007
First off, thank God I am not a Rush fan.
Now, the Rochester show was my 16th show this tour, and I have to admit that I have gotten a little tired of going to Hip shows (My God I can't believe I'm actually saying this!) only because some of the shows have been the same (Hamilton and Toronto in Feb were nearly the same, as well as Syracuse and Rochester), but the experiences with different friends in different places makes each show unique and exciting. I definitely agree with the post that said it's our own damn fault that we keep going to these shows over and over and expect to get something different, radically?, each show. If you're in a band playing 106 shows in one tour, you think you might be on auto pilot too some shows? Of course. I don't blame them for that, but when you're a rock star with a widely known fanbase who travels far to shows, I think you'd give your fans just a little more variety than the same ole standards. Yes, of course they'll play the current album's songs to try to sell to newbies or fans who haven't bought the new album yet, but they can certainly mix in some oldies along with the goodies you all mentioned (ABAC, NOIS). I am a huge fan of Henhouse, so I def don't mind hearing those over and over, but as tth50mc says quite frequently, fans want to hear more B tracks because that's one of the major reasons why we go to these shows, to hear songs you won't hear on the radio or songs you forgot (dare I say "forget") the Hip played! I couldn't even start listing some of the uncommon songs I'd like to hear, too many to choose from, I'd just be grateful to hear some I don't usually hear. It could be a marketing tool for newbies or even existing fans (like myself) to completely round out their Hip collection.
I've probably reiterated everything that's already been said here in this thread, but if you're going to complain, then it's probably time to take a break (not permanently!) from Hip shows until you'll be psyched to see them again. I know that I wasn't completely thrilled to see them this past week (in 'Cuse and Ra-cha-cha) like I was last summer/fall (at Artpark and in Toronto and Stratford and back in Toronto) at the start of the tour. Maybe the timing is good for all of us, including the band, to take a break, maybe even stop listening to the Hip (like a hipbaser voluntarily did a few months ago) so when it comes time again, you'll enjoy it as much, or more so, than you did in the beginning.
As Gord said to me Thursday night (not in this reference but it still works): "Life is too short to drink bad coffee" so turn off the pot until you have some good coffee to brew.
Peace

That could well be the case, and if it is, then it's as good a reason as any.
