Confusedcratch: He didn't have to leave at all, he could have accepted the 'more than reasonable' contract that the Oilers offered him.

briansmccabe Wrote:The fact that Smyth couldn't settle for a few hundred grand less than his overinflated demand shows he's greedy. Period.
Be careful guys, you'll be called 'an idiot' for exhibiting common sense.

no, you got called an idiot for calling a guy a 'crybaby' for expressing some emotion over a tough situation. i'll stand by that...
Tough situation? Boo fucking hoo.. the Oilers offered him $5.4 miillion and not $5.5 million (or whatever the figures were). What a profoundly 'tough situation' indeed! Confusedcratch: I bet everyone here wishes they were in such a tough situation as that!

And actually, I called him a multi-millionaire (greedy) crybaby.. and I'll stand by that...

By the way, what's the difference between calling him a 'crybaby' and calling him someone who 'sobbed like a 6 month old' as tiger commented?

didn't somebody predict that would happen ?

bottom line, is this...he was their best player, and the leader of the team, and they are going to be a much weaker team without him around...regardless of what they would've been paying him...and now that he's gone, what's the attraction for anyone else really good to sign with the Oilers? maybe they'll get Samsanov back hahahahahahaha!

- Hard Canadian - 03-02-2007

wow the oilers have really gone to shit. 5-0? so much for their playoff hopes. looks like their aiming for a high draft pick. i'm hoping caronlina doesn't make the post season either. first time in NHL history the previous finalists won't make it.

anyone catch that little video on sports centre last night about blacks being the first people to really play the game of hockey? i'll try and find it on youtube, it was pretyt interesting.

I think it's foolish to believe that the Smyth deal was just about a few hundred thousand, that is pure speculation. Also, even if the figures were off like that, contracts don't just contain a dollar sign amount and a signature. I think the length of the deal came into play for sure, Edmonton was probably not prepared to offer a long term lucrative deal to a 31 year old in fear his productivity could drop off and they'd be overspending while for Smyth if he didn't get the long term deal he could be dealing with a pay cut in 2 years. Perhaps the idea of a no-trade clause was also up for debate. Negotiations failures are not always just about $.

I think the Oilers lack of committment to Smyth is disgusting not because of the end result, but because of how easily it could have been avoided earlier in the year. In the offseason lucrative extensions were given to players like Horcoff and Pisani, both who I might add have been huge letdowns this year. Ryan Smyth put $5mil on the table and the Oilers didn't want to go that high. Surprise, surprise he had a great year so of course the asking price goes up. The Oilers just kept putting it off until the last possible minute, probably because they expected Smyth to keep giving the home town discount. Contract negotions should have been ongoing with a guy like Smyth, a deal should have been signed in Dec at the latest. But I guess hindsight is 20/20.

Why? Is there another Sidney Crosby in the crop?

Most hockey draft picks take years to develop, this isn't the NFL.

- day_for_night - 03-02-2007

uhh for all those saying are playoff hopes have been dashed by our recent play over the last few games....we weren't making the playoffs as of a couple of weeks ago. at this point, no one likely gives a crap.

and if you're not gonna make the playoffs, you might as well go for the highest draft pick you can get. they make take a couple years to develop, but its still better than nothing.

Didn't the Oilers win the cup w/out Gretzky
anything can happen

- BuffaloHipFan - 03-02-2007

It looks like the 8 playoffs teams in the west are set.

You're not suggesting that the Oilers should INTENTIONALLY tank the season to get the highest draft pick are you? Big Grin That would seriously lower the integrity of the NHL. Tongue

- day_for_night - 03-02-2007

yep, they'd be the first team *ever* to do it Wink

With Bettman as Commisioner, can the integrity of league get any lower? :?
Did you hear his welcome at the Messier game?? The crowd wasn't calling "Mooose" for him. No, they were booing him, and with good reason.

It might not be that intentional. There's a story on TSN about how Lupul and Torres are sucking the big one this year.
