Killer Whale Tank Wrote:Early impressions:
Great songs. Nice to hear the Hip stretching out a bit stylistically too.
Production is very, very slick. The vocals are massaged (pitch control is all over this thing) and there's a background 'pad' to everything (it seems to be concocted of acoustic guitars and, perhaps, synths?). The sound, then, is very 'of the moment,' i.e., it captures the rock and roll sound of the hour. which is very much a high-energy pop/rock kind of sound. I understand the parallel to 'Fully Completely:' it sounds nothing like that album, but it's analogous, because that record also had very commercial production values.
That, of course, is the problem. But I understand why people who listen to the radio like it: it sounds like the other stuff out there, so it won't make anyone uncomfortable. I'll be surprised if it doesn't do quite well.
I NEVER listen to the radio and I love the album. What does that make me?

I hope the KISS reference in THE DROPOFF isn't meant to pay tribute to the band that is known as KISS.

Just got back from the store with WC in hand. Also grabbed the Hold Steady's latest (not a huge fan, but passable) and Sparklehorse's lates. Putting WC in as I type so the only review I can offer at the moment is that it's one of the worst-smelling covers I've ever sniffed.

OK, OK. Love away. I just find the production tiresome - which is true of 90% of the music I hear's all. (A sure sign of overblown production is finding yourself wondering what the song 'really' sounds like, e.g., played live).

This album is amazing. Probably the hardest rocking Hip album since RA. I don't know of any other band that managed to make music this fresh sounding 20 years into thier career.

Here's my list so far:
The Kids Don't Get It
The Drop Off
Yer Not The Ocean
Family Band
World Container
Rink
Fly
In View
Luv (sic)
Pretend
Last Night
This was ridiculously hard to do, and the top 5 songs are all essentially tied in awesomeness with the rest close behind. I also have the sneaking suspicion that Luv (sic) and Last Night might really grow on me. Oh and Pretend, I don't know how it go so far down the list - it's fantastic.

Has anyone with the digipak noticed that there is "hidden" artwork????
I'll give you a clue..... sometimes a booklet holder isn't just a booklet holder.......
