It was a very emotional day. First to wake up to the news about Gord, and then a few hours later find out my wife was being sent to the IWK hospital in Halifax because her doctor thought there was a good chance our then unborn baby might have down syndrome. Thankfully our daughter was born perfectly healthy in October, and while obviously it still sucks about Gord, looking back what a successful year for him & the band!

Would be cool if the CBC June 24th rebroadcast was re-celebrated in Springer Square. (Scotty maybe you can pull this one off!). If it happens I'll pass on the July Talk show in Toronto and make the trek to the limestone city.

Friends want to have a viewing party in Toronto but I'm keeping one eye on Kingston. Wouldn't mind being outside for this one Smile

The way I found out was checking twitter in the morning before heading to work as I always did and seeing that sloan's account had posted a picture of gord, with no accompanying text, and I thought "that's random?" and then saw "Gord Downie" trending and a chill ran down my spine....ugh, still hard to remember.

Sunnybrook just sent out a thanks for donating (and of course a form to give more) and they referenced how everyone remembers hearing the news, and again during the Kingston show. Included a nice post card gift of the band after the Kingston show.

I received that in the mail (here in the States) the other night. It was very kind of them to do that.

Maybe I shouldn't say or post this, but every time I now hear a mention of the Hip on the news (I mostly listen to CBC Radio One) my heart stops for a moment - 'oh no, is this it?' That moment is like getting vertigo or something. Sad

I felt that way last year but that feeling has changed for me. I remember wondering during the two months between the end of May announcement and the July tour start if Gord would even live long enough to start the tour or finish it. After he walked off the stage in Kingston I figured that was the last we'd ever see of him. It felt like the end was imminent. Now, with all the recent public sightings and Gord outwardly doing well, it seems like the end could be a long way away. Of course, I don't want to minimize the seriousness of his condition and the fight he has to put up to keep going, but I wonder how his own perspective has changed over the past 12 months. Did he feel an urgency in 2016 to get things done that he maybe doesn't feel now?

Mike Downie recently referenced Gord being busy writing and recording songs "with old friends". I look forward to hearing the new material one day and seeing if his battle with cancer is reflected in his writing. He's always been more of a storyteller than a confessional or personal songwriter and it will be interesting to see if that changes at all. There is the odd song in his catalogue that is written in the first person (possibly Put it Off, At Transformation) but that's typically never been his style. I would like to see him write a few songs in the first person that put into words how he's felt over the past year.

It may not be Gord feeling the urgency, but the short turnaround between announcement and presentation of his Order of Canada (without his bandmates) leads me to believe someone is feeling it. My reaction to that news, specifically the hastiness of it, put me in the heavy hearted mindset you guys are describing.

The reason for Gord receiving it without his bandmates may be that today's ceremony was to recognize Indigenous Leadership (the other honouree is the executive director of the Ontario Federation of Indigenous Friendship Centres). I believe the rest of the Hip is being honoured for slightly different reasons (social and environmental leadership). For what it's worth he looked good today.

Re: Goodbye To The Hip- I Love you. You know I do - Rye - 05-24-2018

Two years ago today, the announcement dropped. I remember my alarm going off at 6 AM CST and checking my email while still in bed. In the few seconds between seeing the email preview that said, “We have some very hard news to share with you today, and we wish it wasn’t so” and actually opening the email, I think I thought both that Gord had died or left the band (a few rumblings had started based on him missing the Queen’s ceremony the week before).

After seeing this band every 18-24 months from the time I was 13 years old, it’s still almost unbelievable there will never be another Hip show. First and foremost I feel for Gord’s family, friends and bandmates, but selfishly as a fan it upset me even more because I loved the Man Machine Poem record so much. Had something happened and The Hip had to retire around 2013, I think it would have been an easier pill to swallow for me as I was in the camp that the performances had been declining for sometime. It felt like the band had found their fastball again though.

I still can’t believe it either. RIP Gord. I hope his family are doing OK (the best they can, you know what I mean)

Two years, but within that time we were given the final tour, The Secret Path and Introduce Yerself. Looking back now, its hard to imagine any of those things occurring after such a diagnosis. It truly was a gift we got to see and hear.

Gord had already cemented himself into the Canadian music lexicon, but boy he sure finished it all of with an exclamation point.
