Your first point answers itself. Yes an album costs more to make, but there are more copies produced, so the unit cost comes down.

The prints are very limited in quantity and they are all printed with archival quality inks on special stocks, using high end techniques like giclée and screening.

And finally, they are works of art and that's what the artist wants to sell them for.

if the money was going to charity i'd understand (and seriously consider buying one, i love the one of Rob)...but this guy is just trying to get into our pockets...and that is NOT, what art is all about..., ya the guy's gotta make a living blah blah blah, but he could produce more affordable prints of lesser quality, and make it that way..the performances from which the shots were captured were also works of art...and they didn't cost anywhere near as much...

The price of these prints is not high. It might be high for some, but in the world of limited edition prints by established artists, these prices are not high.

And don't forget that as these are photos of a live subject there are probably a bunch of others who get a cut: the band, the management company, the record label, MapleMusic, the photographers management, the venue, etc.

And if you think these costs are high, check out the cost of a royalty free stock photo suitable for reproduction at 10" x 15". $600 and up is not uncommon. And that is just for a digital download of the image. A generic photo to be used in a print ad.

i got the feeling he was more into showing the photos off then actually selling them.

That's exactly what he said!
He was originally just going to put on the exhibit and that was that. Then I believe the management approached him about doing a larger show, one where prints would be sold.

And I agree with Chris, these prices are not all that high for limited edition prints, framed and signed.

It may be that most of us have never bought a limited edition piece of art before so we are blown away by the price of them...
