too many alleged "hip fans" just want them to rehash their older stuff...i think that's part of the problem...perhaps the fans just don't get it...

Lumping together the "Another Midnight!" or New Orleans!" fans at live shows and music lovers who don't like the way certain songs sound is another symptom of bandwagonitis, I think. I noticed in your album review you gave almost every song a rousing cheer, with the exception of World Container. I like the way the album sounds sonically; it defenitely is more crisper than before and I'm glad that they've rediscovered Bobby's guitar solo but seriously, is the album so perfect that you can't find the teensiest (sp?) flaw in more than one song?

Hey gang. I just noticed that World Container moved up 13 spots this week on the Canadian album charts. That's a pretty crazy jump. I'm guessing a lot of folks found a copy of the album under their tree on Christmas morning.

Equally impressive is the increase in sales for 'Yer Favourites'... 161st to 76th is a nice jump for a CD released last November. Considering the retail price of 'Yer Favourites', I think even the most marginal of Hip fans would prefer the double CD over a three pack of tube socks, which, as far as I know, has suffered an incredible industry-wide sales shock after it was discovered that adult men have no need for socks that reach knee length for little to no purpose (citation needed)

i was wondering how the sales were doing. I remember thinking when this thread started "are they just going to get the fan base...or are new listeners going to tune in to the Hip?"
It will be interesting to see if that rank moves up. I still think Luv (sic) should have been a single.

it's like that with darn near every biggish band these days though. long gone are the days of loyal support on a mass level. i can't think of
(m)any "arena" bands that last more than, say, a few albums these days unless they're playing the nostalgia card. people these days, i think, take music as music -- they almost separate it from the band that plays it. next. best. thing.

Arena Bands are going to be a thing of the past. IMO, it doesn't have as much to do with the bands as it does major label record companies. The major labels are of course all about the $$$. Take any band that is somewhat hot right now...ie....My Chemical Romance, Taking Back Sunday...etc... They will be nobodies in a year or two. Thats not my opinion of the band, just the fact that the record companies will promote them for an album or two, squeeze every penny out of it and then let the next cd die..... Bands don't have longevity because record lables don't care anymore. The Hip, U2, The Who, Stones, Springsteen days will be gone forever soon.
To play arenas, an artist/band needs a huge following and several well promoted cd's. Arena shows will become package deals with 4 or 5 bands playing for 45 minutes each.....

sure, there will never be none. but even back in the 80s you could rhyme off 20 bands that could sell out arenas year after year, album after album.
(and most the current ones that still can are 80s bands or prior...i.e. bon jovi, aerosmith, acdc, metallica etc)

Yea, can't argue with the 80's hair bands. some still do well in arena's. I know I'm going to date myself here but a long time ago... when I was very young it seemed there was several bands that for many years were capable of filling arena's and large ampitheaters (summer). Not that they were great bands or anything but these come to mind....Styx, Foreinger, Kansas, Bad Company, Queen, Journey, Genesis, Boston, Bob Seger, Springsteen, Bowie, Elton John, Led Zep....etc. List could go on forever...
Funny thing is most of these bands (even if they don't have but a couple original members) can still play large venues.... because of the huge catalog of well-known music....
Not to knock Coldplay but I can't imagine them filling arena's a year or two from now. I hope I'm wrong but it seems the trend is for a band to have one or two big albums, maybe 3 hot singles, a couple big tours then drop off the face of the planet. Then the A&R guys from the major labels move on to the next money maker and sink a bunch of $$ into them for a year or two.

Ummm, I just didn't want to give my opinions of those bands.... Some I like better than others.... Gotta agree on Zep though, hands down one of the best bands ever!
