I would have to disagree. I Listened to most of the videos and I think that Craig does an awsome job. If his passion is singing Hip songs...I say why not. Keep up the good work, you guys are doing good.

40, shit I thought i was the oldest one on here at 35. Congrats man. I'm not trying to knock you or anything, I just haven't seen much great stuff when it comes to Hip tributes or Covers. I also didn't listen to your samples because of it, and that is my own fault. You are enjoying what you are doing and that is all that matters. Life is too short not to have fun.

- craigd - 08-10-2006

AMEN to that !!
I couldn't agree more !

Practically have a few upcoming shows in my area. One is at Jarvis cornfest this saturday night, the next is in Port Dover during Friday the 13th.

I saw the Practically Hip in Hamilton before one of the New Years shows awhile back. No offence intended but I could'nt handle watching the lead singer.....just a little too much. Have a little bit of originality when your doing your hip covers. It honestly was disturbing to watch. Just me and my two cents. Peace

Local bands spotlighted at Ribfest

GUELPH (Aug 22, 2006)

Rib-eaters will be entertained by a wealth of local bands at this weekend's Ribfest.

Entertainment co-ordinator Michael Balnar said Ribfest is a community event, which is why this year it will feature only local entertainment.

"We don't need big out-of-town names to draw people to Ribfest. What draws people to Ribfest is everything. It's the ribs, it's the music, it's the car show, it's everything. It's all very community-minded."

Plus, he said, the music is great.

The ninth instalment of the rib-eating spectacular at Riverside Park kicks off Friday and runs all weekend.

All the bands have reduced their performance fees, which makes them more affordable, but that's not the main reason for only using local bands this year, Balnar said.

"The main motivation force was just to promote Guelph, promote our community," he said.

John McKinnon, lead guitarist for Practically Hip -- a Tragically Hip tribute band based in Guelph, Hamilton and Barrie -- said it's a great event and he enjoys returning to his hometown to attend it.

This will be his third or fourth time performing at Ribfest.

"It's kind of exciting to be back here in Guelph." McKinnon said the best part of this weekend for him will be seeing people he knows and getting to play in his hometown.

"It's a good opportunity to just play for the community. I love it."

Mike Findlay, the only Toronto-based member of the Guelph band The Kramdens, said Ribfest is "such a great community event. And you can't go wrong with the ribs, too."

This will be the band's third performance at Ribfest.

It's a wonderful chance to promote the "huge wealth" of local talent, Findlay said.

Other bands performing this weekend include Sundried, Shane Philips (Soul City), Farmer and Friends, Blues Synergy, Kicking Trudy, Bisquit Puppy, Michelle Malott, Black Water Trio and Rolly and the Rockers.

I'm pretty sure it was this particular tribute band that I saw in the spring of 2000 out west here. I had only lived here about 6 months when, by accident, I saw their advert on the marquee of a local pub in Coquitlam, BC called "The French Quarter". Being totally starved for some live Hip at the time coupled with M@W's leak on the internet, I made a point of catching their gig.

I was very impressed with the performance and it turned out to be the perfect thing to tide me over until the "Evening With...." tour later that year. It was a long night as the band played two sets with an intermission in between (ironically resembling what The Hip planned for M@W's tour). I remember talking to a band member at half-time about M@W's leak, asking whether they had heard the new stuff or even had a copy of it (which they hadn't or didn't).

They were good people and put on a great show. Unfortunately I've never seen another Hip tribute band since then, but it would be nice to see another in the future.

(If anyone in-the-know thinks this isn't the band I saw, feel free to point it out)

the jarvis cornfest!!! I went to uni with a kid from Jarvis..we called him pigfuc$er, he drank mickies of tequila straight from the bottle, and macked one of the hottest girls in our residence....his name was Mark, and i only mention him cause he is/was the only dude I've ever met who was from Jarvis....he always wanted us to come to cornfest with him..never did.....and, um, I think that the hip cover bands are all pretty cool...Sure, they aren't playing originals, and that's alright by me...I love heading to a shitty bar (Carey's or the damn little bar at Trafalgar & Clarke) and seeing some fine hardworking guys entertain me all night by playing my favourite tunes, while i have some pops with the boys....it's all in good fun, and definately helps to pass the time between real hip gigs

- Fleeter - 08-31-2006

I have seen practicly hip and a tribute act out of Ottawa called Little bones and they both do a pretty good job of the hip stuff, BUT the best hip tribute I've ever seen is this band out of Kingston (yep - that's right Kingston) called Road Apples.

The singer sounded just like Gord and the musicianship outstanding. I've seen them several times and they are bang on. In the day of Road Apples and Fully Completely these guys made huge $$$. They play the odd gig these days but not near the full time basis they once did as they've all got careers.
