Now conference play for baskeball is rolling. My alma mater takes on Illinois tonight to open up its big ten play.
....ummm, Quinn is pretty good, but Vince Young is clearly the best quarterback in CFB right now. He single handedly won that game last night.
And good luck tonight. Michigan State hasn't played as well as I thought they would, but you can't count them out in this game. Illinois is not the same team that they were last year when my alma mater, Ohio State, handed them their only loss of the season. :thumb:

He is ranked #1 in the country in passing efficiency
this year. He oughta go before Leinart if he enters the draft.
If he comes back it'll be a huge mistake. Things have shaken out beautifully for him as of last night, and he should take advantage of his current standing instead of rolling the dice and playing another season. What if Ohio State whoops Texas next September? Look at Leinart, he would've gone #1 in the draft last year, but now he'll be lucky to go #3 overall. He cost himself millions with a decision to return to win a mythical 3rd straight national title for USC, and shot himself in the foot.

I dunno about that. Alex Smith hasn't really turned things around in SF

hock: and become a highly marketable superstar, yet Leinart, despite the loss, is a pretty big name in a pretty big media town that presently has no NFL team but just hosted what was arguably a bigger and better game than the Superbowl. Plus, he spent the entire year being labled as "the greatest college QB". You can't buy that kind of press, even in L.A.
The only thing that hurts Leinart this year are things out of his control, such as the draft order and strength of players, the fact that he's likely to be picked by a team that has been wiped out by Katrina, and... oh yeah... Pete Carroll not putting the Heisman Trophy winner in the game at the most crucial down of the year.

hock:
Carroll looked like a genius after the Notre Dame squeaker (still a better game than last night's). This time however... not so much.

Which is precisely why he should have gone to the NFL last year when things WERE in his control - he would have been the #1 pick overall
hands down in the '05 draft. But now - who knows? He already has sacrificed one years' NFL #1 pick salary, and may miss millions more signing a LTC as a #2 pick behind Bush, or even worse.
Good press and media accolades for college players mean NOTHING to NFL organizations when it comes to draft selections. The NFL combine, game film, personal interviews, and individual teams' need are what dictate selection order.

That's correct in terms of his NFL salary and signing bonus, but how much more is he likely to make in terms of endorsements, sponsors, and all stuff that goes along with being the Big Man on Hollywood Campus. It's the same argument that pops up when pundits talk about the "when" (not the if) LeBron James will leave Cleveland for a team in a big media town.
Leinart could've gone NFL last year and taken very few snaps, just like Philip Rivers. Ken Dorsey of U of Miami, even with a college record that is better than Leinart's, barely plays for SF. Leinart will still sign for big $$$ (it's not like his stock dropped based on last night's game), but I'd argue he's an even bigger football icon - and therefore even more marketable - than when he won the national championship last year.
Then again, he could blow out his knee playing basketball before draft day and all this is a moot point!!!

Personally, I feel its a Catch-22 for Leinart to enter last year's draft or this year's. On the plus side, he's probably going to make more money than last year because the contract amounts almost always go up and he has a better shot at getting selected by a team that won't put him on the firing line right away ala David Carr. I can't see New Orleans drafting a quarterback, San Fran has Smith, Green Bay has Rodgers and NY Jets have Pennington coming back. Detroit I can see drafting a quarterback and if Vince comes out for the draft then he's likely to be drafted before Leinart.

After watching last night and seeing with my own two eyes that Vince Young COULD NOT BE STOPPED, I got to thinking about a comparison. Now, since Young led the country in passing efficiency, most of you will just dismiss this out of hand but I'll say it anyway. Despite the passing numbers, all i heard about Young was that you couldn't let him run and if you forced him to pass, he was an average QB. Ok, now my question. How does Young compare to Michael Vick? I remember Vick COULD NOT BE STOPPED in college. He was thought of as the greatest athlete in all of football. Young is now thought of as unstoppable on the ground. Young can apparently pass better than Vick could. Vick was thought of as a FRANCHISE QB ever since being drafted. People will argue that he is or isn't but he was thought of as a sure thing. Do you guys think Young will be BETTER than Vick?

Here is to hoping that Drew Stanton can lead them to a big season in 2006.
As for the draft everything I have read so far (espn etc) say Young if he came out this year would not be a top five pick. So I dont know. College QBs making the jump to the NFL is a funny thing. Look at scrapes like Andre Ware of Det, Tony Banks in St L. They were the same type of QBs as Young and were useless.
You watch alot of Young's runs last night and throughout the season and I say he doesnt even break 5 percent of those in the NFL. Guys barely miss there.
