I'd really, really like to see the Grey Cup, but I can't because I live in the southern US and no one (to my knowledge by reading that map on cfl.ca of stations that show it in the States) will be carrying it. Dammit.

I've heard it on CBC and TSN's CFL Countdown. I don't have any explanation for it, but the fanbase is defintely larger than in past years. I went to four Argo's games this year, and every game had over 30,000 fans. The last two had more than 40,000. Those are huge numbers for a city that normally loses all interest as soon as the Leafs hit the ice.

I think the optimism about the Grey Cup and it's ratings is owed in part to the little-hyped record-breaking year for CFL Attendance.

2005 saw 2,303,365 fans show up to watch the games, which is an all-time record, just barely beating the 1979 season which had somewhere in the range of 20,000 fewer than this season.
Those records even include the years of CFL expansion, which would see up to 126 games instead of this years' 81.

Yep, viewership has been going up, and major media markets like Montreal do make a difference. Largely because the CFL is very, very big in Quebec right now: junior leagues popping up like mad and high school games drawing 6,000 in Trois Rivieres. When the Al's are playing, the league benefits from higher numbers on SRC/RDS, a market that all but dissapears when they're not.

The balls are still thicker. I got to toss one around on the field here in Ottawa in June during a Renegades press deal, I dunno if they're thinner than in previous years, but they're still larger than NFL balls. I also bought what Canadian Tire calls an "official 2005 CFL Game Ball" for a buddy who had a son in August (to write the kids name, birthdate and weight on it) and they were certainly larger than the NFL balls on the shelf at the CT, whatever that's worth.

I manage to get the game on 2 different channels, one of them will even be showing it live. It looks like CSS is showing in NC, do you get that channel? Here is the full list of US broadcasters showing the game:

This discussion reminds me of that Seinfeld episode where Jerry gets tickets to the Super Bowl, and when he asks Kramer if he wants to go, he declines because he's only interested in Canadian football. And then there's the one where he asks to borrow Jerry's VCR so he can tape the CFL draft. Too funny!

My prediction: Eskies by 10, as much as I hate to admit it. (still can't believe how badly Calgary blew that game)

The Simpsons also had a CFL reference in the episode where Flanders opens the Leftorium. Homer skips Flanders' BBQ and Marge says he is at the power plant doing work while he's really drinking beer and watching exciting 15th round coverage of the CFL draft! Classic :thumb:

That Grey Cup was one of the most entertaining football games Ive ever seen, congrats Edmonton!! I wish the Super Bowl could be that exciting.

Damn straight! That will go down as yet another Grey Cup Classic. As in depth (and humourous) as Stephen's overview of the CFL version of the game, the other thing I don't think he mentioned is that the Grey Cup often produces spectacular games, while the Super Bowl often produces duds.

I was upset at how my Argos coughed it up last week against the Alouettes, so I was happy to see the Eskies win. But here's hoping it's Argos in 2006, baby!

Great game though. I love football of all kinds, including the CFL. Today's Grey Cup game just reminded me of why I love the CFL! :thumb:

Great game. Ricky Ray came through without the aid of Jason Maas this time. I think the Esk's coach thought the game was over on the 2nd down incompletion by Calvillo. Maybe he thought it was third down.

That was the by far the best football game I've seen in ages, CFL or NFL. Both quarterbacks played great, and the overtime was intense! Congrats to the Eskimos (puke!) That rookie coach of theirs is quite a character. Gotta love him!

I really like the overtime format in the CFL, its way more fair that way and it doesn't just come down to a coin toss like in the NFL. I have no idea why the NFL hasn't adopted that format for O.T. by the way, great game congrats eskies.

i didnt get to see the game as i was at work, but i saw the highlights and i am kicking myself that i didnt get to see it live, it looked like a great game!
