I just read a review of Friday's U2 show in Toronto and the guy had a seat slightly behind the stage and had a perfect view of Bono's teleprompter...now the interesting part, all of his speeches in between songs were read word for word off the screen. The guy was close enough that he could see the words...this combined with his celebrity shout-outs have convinced me to never buy another cd or ticket for them...they have,
"jumped the shark"

I have seen a number of the top bands in the world live, including U2, and they are still by far #1 live.

In fact a friend of mine was lucky enough to get into the Stones club show in Toronto a few weeks back. This guy is a hardcore lifelong Stones fan. He is a mediocre U2 fan. Likes their songs, doesn't buy their albums.

He was also at this U2 show in Toronto and said it was a religious experience. That it topped the Stones club show as the best show he had ever seen. Believe me, coming from him that was quite a shocking statement.

Regardless of celebrity shout-outs or telepromoters I will spend $100 on a U2 ticket everytime they head out on tour.

If you have never been, I reccomend this is one band you see live before you die. Even if you don't own any of their stuff.

I'm betting your friend would feel differently if he had the perspective that the previous poster had (seieng the teleprompter). Face it, "speeches" during a concert are annoying enough; *scripted* speeches? Straight up pathetic.

I have seen them live, on the Pop tour (which at the time, I thought was one of the best things I'd ever witnessed) and the last arena tour (which was great) but when you get to a point where the lead singer of a rock band is giving celebrity shout-outs and is reading speeches off a teleprompter, where's the magic and beauty of a live show in that. Bono is dangerously close to becoming a politician now, not a rock singer. I have been a big fan, but this is bordering on pathetic, in my books. Especially after just seeing a Pearl Jam show that is still rocking my world...Bono should take a step back and look at what he's becoming...cause it ain't rock n' roll

I love U2, but during a recent episode of Entourage (where they filmed a bit at one of U2's shows) Bono shouted out the name of a character on the show (the character played by Kevin Dillon). I thought that that was pretty lame. I'm not talking Raine Maida lame (nothing is that lame), but lame nevertheless.

Wow, that is lame. And I agree that the teleprompter thing is pretty lame as well...but I gotta say, as a live band they still kick the shit out of most bands half their age. I haven't seen them on the Vertigo tour, but I saw them in Montreal in 2001 and was thoroughly blown away. To this day that is still the best freakin' arena show I've ever witnessed, teleprompter or not. Pearl Jam's recent Calgary show and the Hip's 1999 New Years Eve gig at the ACC are tied for second.

Well he has seen Jagger's telepromter on the current Stones tour sitting in the stage seating and that didn't seem to bother him too much, so I doubt Bono's telepromter would.

Too each their own, but I could care less if a guy read crib notes or cue cards during his performance just as long as it is one hell of a live show and I get my money's worth.

I won't aregue with you there. Everybody knows Edge is the Rock N' Rol in that band. As much of a wanker that Bono is, he is still twice as classy as most of the little punks that are fronting bands these days. (Man I'm starting to sound old)

I agree...and I like them...I guess I'm just disappointed in these things finding their way into their show. I'm sure it was a great show though. And I heard they were joined by Eddie Vedder for the last show in Toronto...damn, that'd be something to see. Apparently, all of PJ were watching from the soundboard area...and Eddie was stopped by ushers as he tried to bring his beer onto the floor area (which I guess was a no-alcohol zone) He gunned it and joined the rest of the band to catch the show. That's pretty fucking cool

I'm young and I agree 100%. First, The Edge IS U2. Bono's excellent voice is unmistakable, but it's The Edge's guitar playing that I appreciated most on Wednesday night. I could also see Bono's teleprompter, I couldn't read it, but I knew what it was. The only point in the show he read right off it was during the Italian part of Miss Sarajevo. Completely understandable. Sure, Bono's speeches are scripted, but U2 has an agenda and a cause to promote - they've never made that a secret. I don't agree with Bono on a lot of things politically, but it didn't bother me all that much. The music more than made up for it.
