exactly..i'm sick of hearing about how video games are still just for kids..it's an adult game....know how to PARENT....

I'm curious as to what the attack on parents is about. What do you suggest? That parents take computers away from the kids? That parents watch their kids 24/7? The simple fact of the matter is that if it is out there, and kids want to get their hands on it, they will. It isn't a function of good or bad parenting.

Obviously 24/7 supervision is not something that is feasible, but having a look at the video game titles and ESRB ratings coming into the house is. The original rating of GTA: San Andreas was M, which means only people 17 and over should be playing it......not kids.... It is only slightly ironic that the new rating means only people over the age of 18 can play it.....

BTW those that haven't checked it out already...Maddox PWNED this whole situation : <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=ticket_to_hell">http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net ... et_to_hell</a><!-- m -->

You didn't go over to a friend's house when you were a kid? Didn't your friends have older brothers or sisters? Simply not allowing a game in the house hardly ensures that kids won't have a chance to see it.

but then the responsibility os shared between the childs parents and the parents of the friend

Ah, I get it. So parents are responsible for the parents of their kids' friends as well. Yeah, that's realistic.

Confusedcratch:

no... i meant that i am responsible for my daughter and what she watches. i hope that her friends parents are responsible enough to do the same for their own kids.

for example. if my child wasn't allowed to play GTA at home, and she had a friend that is alowwed to play it. i wouldn't let her play at that childs house if i knew there was a chance she would be playing the game.

- cferneyh - 07-27-2005

Best of luck knowing everything there is to know about your daughter's friends.

Be realistic.

And telling your daughter that she can't hang out with a friend because of that video game would only make her more curious. Geeze man, did you have a childhood? Did your parents know everything there was to know about your friends? Did they know about everything that you did?

Look, the only point I am trying to make is that a kid coming across this game is hardly a function of good or bad parenting. Sure, if you let your ten year old buy this game and play it, then that is bad parenting. But if your kid comes across it at a friend's place because that friend has an older brother, well that is hardly a function of poor parenting. You are living in a dream world if you think you are going to be able to control everything your daughter sees.

I'm curious as to what the attack on parents is about. What do you suggest? That parents take computers away from the kids? That parents watch their kids 24/7? I disagree completely. There was no chance in hell I would have been able to get a game like GTA into the house and play it when I was a kid. A diligent and concerned parent CAN keep this crap away from their kids. The problem is that too many parents are afraid to be the "bad guy" or "too strict" with their kids. These days, they want to be "best friends" with their kids and don't want to "create friction in their relationships".

Face it, parents these days don't come close to setting appropriate boundaries for their kids and allow their kids rule the roost, just so Johnny doesn't 'hate on them'. And it makes the job that much harder for the parents who actually try.

- cferneyh - 07-27-2005

Again, as I stated, YOU can do all YOU want to make sure a game like this doesn't get into YOUR house. But how do you control against what your kids' friends' parents allow/disallow? How do you control against your kids' friends having older siblings who generally have more leeway (and in many cases, poor judgement)?

When I was a kid, I had a couple of friends with older brothers and I saw a lot of things at a young age that I wouldn't have seen otherwise. I don't see how that reflects on my parents' ability to parent.

I'm not so naive to believe that when my son gets old enough and starts going to his friends houses that I'm going to know everything that he is doing. As an (apparently) all knowing parent, what do you suggest? That when he gets home I grill him on what he did, what he saw, and what was said? Or do I take an inventory of his friends' houses, including a scan of their hard drive to see what's on the computer? Is there some sort of test I should administer to his friends' parents?

- The Horrible Esthete - 07-27-2005

So you don't think a parent can control who his kid hangs out with?

My parents did.

You're just making excuses for parents who are too lazy or otherwise unwilling to ensure thattheir children are appropriately supervised. There comes a time (age) where this becomes difficult to do, no doubt....but by that time, things like animated sex scenes aren't a major concern.......

Uh, ya know ... I am a "parent these days," and well, that looks a lot like a sweeping generalization to me.

I don't know many "parents these days" who fit that description. Certainly no more than I remember from when I was a kid.

Your parents "controlled" who you hung out with? How did they do that exactly? Did they stalk you 24/7? Did they sit beside you in class and during lunch? Did they come pick you up?

I'm not making excuses for anyone. I'm simply saying that there is NO WAY to know what your kid is doing 24/7. You raise them the best you can, but at some point you have to let them figure out things on their own and hope that they use the good judgement that you've hopefully taught them. That's not lazy parenting. It's called trust. Seems to me that you think being a parent is similar to owning a pet.

Are there bad parents? Of course there are. Are there lazy parents? Of course there are. But I don't think it is any worse than it has ever been. I think you have a case of "the good ole days".

- The Horrible Esthete - 07-27-2005

Well, skippy, if it doesn't apply to you, fine. But the are lots of "parents these days" that are shirking their responsibilities to their children by neglecting to supervise them and set boudaries. I don't see how you can even BEGIN to argue that, but whatever.

Believe it or not, there are MILLIONS of kids with these "AO" games in their possession. And for most every one, there's a lousy parent who either doesn't know or care that they have 'em.

The point is, it's no one's responsibility to ensure that this CRAP stays out of the hands of children but the PARENTS. Not the GOVERNMENT'S, not the VENDORS, not the MARKETERS. It's on mothers and fathers. Period.

Where's the proof? I'm being serious. I'd like to know what/where the statistical evidence is that proves there are more bad parents today than there were 20 or 30 years ago.

- The Horrible Esthete - 07-27-2005

If it's important enough to raise your kids properly, you MAKE it "the good ole days", not in the outside world, but in your household. You'd be surprised what you as a parent are privy to if you take a deep interest in your child's life, establish open lines of communication, and put a premium on honesty and decency.

Good luck raising your daughter - sounds you're gonna need it. Either that or some better excuses.
