So... how hard is it to ride in the Tour?

Here's a neat article from Wired.com that discusses a study done during this year's race with Floyd Landis who placed 9th overall this year. Floyd was on the US Postal Service team last year with Lance Armstrong.

For those who don't want to read the article... basically, these guys are as near to super-human as we're going to find.

My wife and I are heading to France this summer to follow the tour from the Alps to Paris! Woo Hoo!

I'm taking my bike and will attempt to ride some/all of each stage that they Tour takes while we are there.

I know that Jenna's been to the Tour, any one else?

Any Toronto-area cyclists looking for a riding/training partner?

Chris, my dad's friend Bill is a top master's cyclist and has ridden the Tour route a few times over the years. I know he suggests intense hill training for at least 3 months prior to heading over to participate. There are quite a few groups that offer packages, though I'm not sure if that's what you're planning to do.

When we went over in '02, we spent most of the trip in the mountain town of Megeve. Its a beautiful town, very peaceful, yet still close to many major tour arrival/departure towns. We stayed at the Au Vieux Moulin. It serves primarily as a ski lodge, but is still worth checking out in the summer months. Here's the link to the hotel's main site. Google Releases Street View for Tour de France in Google Earth/Maps

Google has just released new Street View imagery for the first time in another country other than the US. What better place than France in July? Just in time for the Tour de France. One of my early favorite KML file collections depicted the routes of the Tour de France. It's amazing to tilt your view and see the difficult climbs and distances the racers have to endure. This year, I already pointed to a collection showing the 2008 Tour de France routes by Thomas Vergouwen. But, now Google is providing high quality street-level views of the routes. Turn on the Street View layer in Google Earth. Zoom in close in France to find a camera icon along a route you want to look at. Click on a camera and follow the link to "Jump into Street View". The quality of some of these photos is really good. I particularly like some of the shots in the French Alps. Double-click on the gold camera icons to fly to other images. Of course, you can also use Google Maps to view the French Street Views. via Google Operating System

I'll be watching. I have yet to see the opening time trial. However, at first blush, it looks like Lance has a really strong team behind him. Possibly, an 8th yellow jersey sort of good.

Contador, Leipheimer, Klöden, Armstrong - all on one team, and all looking on top form. It may come down to Bruyneel and who he choses as the team leader. Contador is wearing number 1, and based on todays performance is the number 1 guy, but Lance has said he's there to win - and I'm sure that Leipheimer would like to take a shot at being the top guy for once.

For the first time, I'd like to see Lance lose. He's been out of it for a few years here, and he joined a stack team that is going to have some serious identity crises in the coming days. Reminds me of...oh....Rasmussen/Menchov/Boogerd.

I still miss Rasmussen....fav rider for sure...

But I digress.

I've decided I'm going to cheer for Cadel Evans this year. I think one of the Schlecks could finish in the top 3 as well, but Frank crashed yesterday there so I wonder if that will affect him down the road. Ah well. The Spaniards have been strong the past few years so we'll see if they can keep that goin.

I want Lance to win - just to stick it to all the doubters. He's the best and I think that a win this year might silence any more doubters.

Contador is a great rider, but missing the split yesterday is unforgivable.

And as for The Chicken... why hasn't he found a new team?

Cadel needs a better team. We went to the Tour last year and were rooting for Cadel from day one, but it was disheartening to be on Alpe d'Huez and watch the Schlecks "taunt" him as Sastre rode away....

Oh goodness don't get me on Huez from last year Chris...I was screaming at my TV for a good 20 minutes yelling RIDE DAMMIT RIDE! Much like Cavendish's comments after stage 3 yesterday saying that the peloton rode "like juniors." Sheesh they just took their sweet, pedestrian time getting up that mountain last year. Anybody from that group who had a pair of man balls could have gone up the mountain himself and won the Tour. I don't know why none of them did. Pansies.

I totally agree with you on Cadel Evans though...haven't watched today's stage...I suppose it will be telling of which teams are strongest.

According to Wiki, the "Chicken" (...lol) is barred from racing until July of next year. I guess that's what his penalty was....although I still think it was lame. He was never actually busted. He also had Yellow for like 8 days, becoming one of the most tested athletes of that Tour.

Which brings me to any idiot who thinks Lance won 7 Tours by being on some kind of drug. Seriously. The dude is the most tested athlete OF ALL TIME. Every single lab in the whole world has a sample of this guy's urine. If he was doing something, anything, even remotely suspicious, it would have been caught. Why can't people just believe that somebody can be that good?

Stage 4 (team time trials) Tuesday were captivating.

Lance is a beast.
