I want to think this too. But then I hear that Bono and Paul McCartney got into an argument right before Live8 because both wanted to be the opening act of the London concert and neither would step down; grow up guys. The concert was about refocusing public attention on poverty in Africa, not about boosting ego's.

Actually, the opening U2/McCartney duet was Geldof's idea. Sir Paul was already scheduled to close the London show, and Geldof called him and asked about the idea of him doing Sgt. Pepper with U2 to open the show.
U2 had already agreed to do it. Paul hadn't played the song live since the Beatles broke up, but he thought it was a cool idea, so he agreed as well. I didn't hear anything about a backstage argument.

It wasn't backstage, my mistake for insinuating that, but there are numerous sources which indicate there was indeed an argument between the two. A quote from one of the numerous internet sources on the topic:

"Sir Paul McCartney will headline at charity show Live 8 - after threatening to pull out.
The 62-year-old Beatles star reportedly told organisers he wanted to open and close the charity concert at London's Hyde Park or he would "think seriously" about whether to take part at all, according to Britain's Daily Mail newspaper.
The demand is said to have angered other stars, including U2's Bono, who wanted to open the star-studded show.
Organisers gave in to the singer's request, but decided McCartney - who also headlined Live Aid in 1985 - will share the stage for the opening number with Bono and his band U2."

Well if it was printed in an English newspaper, it MUST be true.
