Anybody who conscientiously ignores the drummer in a rock band must have a degree in Hip-Hopology. The drummer of a solid, rhythmically creative rock band deserves more credit than he gets. Often, a simple drum intro sets the tone for a rock beat; proper bass and drum collaboration is the back-bone of any good rock band. It's been that way since the '60s; it provides flow, and essentially a spine on which a band can inter-twine guitar rhythm, guitar solo's, and vocals, although the drum track often doesn't come first in a recording session. Solid drummers in good bands are under-rated.

And Johnny really is a solid drummer. I know which triplet fill 'fingernailsonhull' is referring to in Bobcaygeon (if it's the snare part 10 seconds from the end), but it doesn't come across as an error... who really know... it's flawed if it was as attempted triplet fill, but I'm not sure it was.

And if you're looking for a 'Let's bash Johnny' thread, one already exists, where I became the bastard scapegoat who said Fully Completely and Up To Here were drum lacking; although I never strayed from my original opinion that Johnny Fay was a solid drummer...

Hip=one of the greatest rhythm sections ever in a band
Rhythm section = rhythm guitar, bass, drums
therefore, drums are very important to a band

think of Zeppelin, Rush, the Who. those bands don't exist without the masterpiece drumming of Bonham, Peart and Moon. I'm sure Johnny won't consider himself in that league, not many are, but he is and the drumming is as part of the band as anyone else. No Johnny=no Hip

No it's not. This person is being brutally honest and there's nothing wrong with that.

Perhaps you should explain why you don't share the same views as this person rather than be so insulting.

I, unlike 'intothenight', find the drums quite pleasant.

It seems that Johnny, especially in older albums, was there moreso to keep a simple rythym than anything. But I have noticed that in live shows and newer songs he is getting a bit more creative. As someone said, he does have alot of power when he's performing, and that gives the music alot of energy and emotion IMO. An example of that is Gus, it's a simple beat but powerful. A good example of this is the Mod Club show that's online. You can really see how much he exerts and how his style adds to the songs.

Maybe not worst or dumbest but certainly one of the saddest. If you never pay attention to drums, i would suggest you aren't paying attention to the music as a whole. As folks have attested to in this thread, much modern music wouldn't exist as we know it without Bonham, Moon and the guy from James Brown's band. I don't just mean sampling--I mean physical style and what the drums bring to the sound as a whole. And I'm not a drummer (but I am a bassist--part of that aforementioned "rhythm section").

I know its simple, but I love the opening in Grace Too.

That part in the Bobcaygeon video where Johnny picks up the beat to shit drum set and starts drumming. Does that count????? Anyone know what it says on the drum?? Johnny something I think.

- das_hips - 06-29-2005

I haven't seen the video in quite some time, but I seem to remember the bass drum reading 'The Constellations', the Pseudo-Title of the band in the video (much like 'The Rodents' in Poets, and 'The Filters' in Music @ Work).

I know Rob's acoustic reads 'This Machine Kills Fascists', penned originally by Woodie Guthrie in the '50s and recently revived by K-OS in his 'Crabbuckit' video...

Once, just once, I'd love to see K-OS join the Hip on stage, and have him belt out the 'If I die of Vanity...' bridge in 'At The Hundredth Meridian'...

Summer's Killing Us (live), especially the BUM-BUM-BUM sounds followed by machine-gun drumming druing the "praaaaaaaaises" parts.
