The counters are good, but firewalling seems to screw with them. I've put the ratio ban in place now, to prepare people for the new tracker software (I'm getting what <a class="postlink" href="http://www.easytree.org">www.easytree.org</a> is running - ratio ban included and active)

As long as your cumulative ratio is 0.25 or higher, you're allowed to join a torrent as a leecher. Any member, regardless of ratio, who has a complete copy of a torrent may join it as a seed. Any member, regardless of ratio, may upload and seed a new torrent.

The rest of this answer spells out the rules for letting a user with a ratio below 0.25 join a torrent as a leecher. If your ratio is 0.25 or higher and you keep it there, you don't have to read the rest of this answer.

The SRE rules are based on an enforcement cycle. A cycle is 5.00 GB for users of Uploader rank, larger for VIPs. You can find out the size of your cycle on your Control Panel (click "User CP" in the upper right of any of our pages after you've logged in).

Whenever your total download reaches a multiple of your cycle size, you can't join any more torrents as a leecher unless your ratio is at least the required minimum (currently 0.25). You can raise your ratio by seeding torrents where you already have a complete copy, or by uploading and seeding new torrents of your own. Once your ratio is high enough, you can enter a torrent as a leecher again, at least until your total download gets to the next multiple of your cycle size.

The tracker makes its decision when you try to join or rejoin a torrent; it will not kick you out of a swarm if you're already inside it. Any downloading you do is treated as part of the cycle you were in when you entered the swarm. However, the enforcement rules can potentially prevent you from rejoining a swarm after you leave it, even if it happens involuntarily (for examples, a system crash or a power failure). We recommend that you keep your ratio well above the minimum and that you not flirt with the limits.

I would then encourage people to get on new torrents as quickly as possible. One disadvantage a smaller tracker may have is less shows to get your ratio up. People who jump on right away have the advantage of sharing with more people together as opposed to someone who sees a show a couple of days later and jumps on with 1 or 2 seeders and no other leechers. Its hard to get your upload ratio up if all the people on the show with you don't need any of it. Or else keep the show on your hard drive longer and always be ready to jump on as a seeder. Does that make sense? I know what I'm trying to say but not sure it comes across well. I'm ok I have a pretty high share ratio but .5 does seem high for a smaller less public site. Any thoughts or help to clarify what I think I'm trying to say?

Seems like a fair request. I don't think my ratio is a problem now, but I'll try to make sure that I keep it above 0.50.

Thanks to everyone for sharing... I don't have any of my own copies, but I'll try to do what I can by seeding other torrents once I have downloaded my own. Just a small gesture I know, but I'm sure every little bit helps.

Once I get the new software, I'll monitor the bans, and probably lower the share ratio...

All I want it for the tracker to be successful, and that everyone gets to hear/see more great Hip shows. The topic will always remain open for debate, as will the direction we take with the tracker, but in the end it is a personal project. Smile

I just fixed the PM system on the tracker so that apostrophes show up without the /// preceeding them.

Well folks, it's been a few months since I last did any major improvements to the tracker, but I'm at it again. I just improved the monitoring of upload and download speeds, and added a fancy disclaimer at the bottom of the main page. I'm not going to change the software as it is too much work for not enough reward. If there are any php or MySQl junkies out there that want to help out, please let me know.

I am still trying to solve the search feature problems.

Please let me know if there is anything specific you think we should add.

I haven't banned or kicked anyone from the site, and the complaints have dwindled into a rivulet from the flood it once was.

I hope everyone is still having fun with it.

I like the addition of the section with the shows needing seeds.

Another nice little touch there might be to somehow direct the newbie types to browse those dead torrents more easily. I am not sure it is obvious to the newbie that there are, in fact, a bunch of other shows beyond those shown on the front page.

chris, I know you are having a little trouble with the search feature, and the faq could also cover this easily enough, but until that is ready, maybe more people can find dead torrents with a quick blurb there telling them to jump on and be patient and/or how/where to request a reseed.

I have seeded an old show for no apparent reason and ended up getting a couple leechers, so there are people jumping on shows when they see them seeded.

In the meantime, Google says that although I have their advertising on my site, (as does Hipbase - look to the bottom of each page) I am not allowed to ask or direct people to please click on the ads.

are you still looking to email updates because i never got them in the first place. Well I might have but 200 junk emails a day and some things get deleted but i would have noticed the address. Put me on the list if you are still doing this. :thumb:

an example today of seeding an old show and having people jump on....

Today I read a post about woodstock99 and someone asked if anyone had a version for torrent. I replied that it was upped to the tracker and that I would open the seed.

Next thing I knew I had 3 leechers. (evidently not including the original request)

I just added a "Shout Box" on the main page that users can use to request seeds. Give it a try, and let me know how it works out.

As well, in case anyone was wondering, those are in fact gooooogle ads appearing on each page. Those ads, when people click on them, generate a small amount of revenue. If every user clicks on 1 ad per day, the site will come close to breaking even. The same goes for the ads here at Hipbase. (I'm not trying to beat a dead horse, but I figure that as it doesn't cost any users anything to use the sites, or click on the ads - it's the least everyone can do to help out.)
