A business associate successfully used Nicorette gum as a quitting aid. He cut several pieces into very small "bits" about half the size of a Tic-Tac and carried them in a 35 mm film container. When he felt the need, he'd pop one in his mouth. Like o78 said, he had a hard time counting his masticatory actions. With these little pieces, it was easier for him to chew less frequently.
Anything to get a little distraction going with hand & mouth will probably work. When I'm traveling, I use Tootsie-Pops on long flights and layovers. Works pretty well for me, temporarily; I always light up in the rental car, though. Damn it!

film containers are a bad idea. they contain small amounts of chemicals from the film and should never be used to hold food items like the gum.

o78 Wrote:Oh god...If you can do without it - stay away from the Nicorette gum. I chose to live through my cravings rather than chew that crap anymore. If you don't mind the taste of metal along with dizziness, nausea, and light-headedness then this gum is for you! That stuff made me feel 10 times worse than I ever did smoking - so not worth it. *chew - chew - stop* or whatever. Who has the time to sit there and monitor how many times you chew a piece of gum consecutively? Is there anyone who has actually had some success with Nicorette? I know numerous people who have tried it and got the same results I did. Ew. Gross. Yuck.
I have leaned on the Nic gum - it has been a valuable aid. The taste? Pretty bad, yes, but the
orange flavor is more tolerable than the
mint. It's the 'nicotine polacrilex' (the active ingredient) that has the awful bitter taste, so if you want the medicine, you just have to deal, I suppose.
As for the 'dizziness, nausea, and light-headedness', well, that's the effect of nicotine! If it's that extreme, then you probably are receiving a greater dosage than needed. And I don't 'count chews' (that's just silly), I just pop a piece when I feel a 'fit' coming on, chew until I taste the nicotine, then spit it out. I used about 5 pieces on Day 1, 5 on Day 2, 3 on Day 3, and hope to eliminate it altogether by week's end....

well it's good the gum is helping some people. Maybe my stomach was way to sensitive to it. I just replaced it with normal minty gum which did help a little because the taste if a cigarette mixed with mint is just disgusting. Unless you enjoy menthol cigarettes then that's beyond my control.
