Getting back to the subject of the thread...

Every time another artist puts their "artistic spin" on the national anthem, it just makes me appreciate the job that GD did at the MLB All-Star Game that much more. :thumb:

Also loved the fact the band didn't wear parkas or the like during their performance...unlike the aforementioned anthem singer... 8)

I apologise for interjecting...we now return you to your regularly-scheduled CAN-AM border bash...

for the record i didnt start a US vs Canada bashing. I started a discussion on why every song had to be from a canadian artist or people got mad. The the inferiority complex kicked in and people starting hating on the US.

I'm glad I missed it! I hate it when people ruin the national anthem by adding their twist to it. Ok here's my .02. It's obvious that Canadians support their country in different ways than Americans. Whats wrong with being proud of your nation????Nothing! Don't bash us for being upset that we heard poppy American music instead of something Canadian. It's a Canadian event I don't think that it's hard to understand why we would wanna hear something that means a little more to us.Anyway I don't wanna fight with anyone that's just my opinion.

Not only was it bad artisticness (is that even a word?), she didn't even sing it that well. Hearing bad versions like that makes me so happy when they do it properly though...

Poppy American and Canadian singers have one thing in common; the tendency to take artistic license to their respective national anthem and royally botch it up. You saw Kendra whatever her name is do her terrible version of O Canada and we've had Fantasia, Rosanne Confused

Who says it needs to be pop singers? How about JANN freakin' ARDEN?? After her scandal at the Flames game, I can't say I'll ever complain about someone else roasting the anthem ever again...

Hey, Mike. I'm a Canadian and I agree 100%. Canada's inferiority complex is something to behold. It seems like as a country, we all need to get approval from the US and the rest of the world.

Every song doesn't have to be from a Canadian artist, you're right. I happen to agree with your point.

Then the the "at least we have a country to be proud of" statement came forth. Heck, I'm proud to be a Canadian but if I lived in the US I'd be proud to be an American, or if I lived in Sweden I would be proud to be a Swede, and so on.

I don't think it's an inferiority complex nearly so much as it is our proximity to a neighbour who is so boisterous and so vocally patriotic that we feel the need to constantly distinguish ourselves from them. If we didn't stand up for our Canadianness, it would feel like we were just being swamped by American culture. Which we are, let's not kid ourselves, but it means we have to strive all the more to define for ourselves some element of our society that makes us different.

I sent this text to someone in a PM explaining the situation. Hopefully they won't mind if I restate it here for all to see.

Jann sang the anthem in the Conference Finals. Her screeching, tone-deaf rendition would have been unbearable if it weren't so damn funny. I mean, it's hard to imagine it, but it was SO bad it was actually HILARIOUS. Thank god there was no American anthem (it was a Flames-Canucks game) because there was no way I could have avoided wetting myself at the "rocket's red GLAAAAAAARE" bit if she had done it.

Rather than refer you to the harsh and unsportsmanlike criticisms of her performance, I'll instead give you her thoughts (and her apology) posted in her live journal shortly thereafter. I felt so bad for her because she's made some wonderful music, but whoever asked her to perform a roaring, anthemic song such as a national anthem needs to have their head examined.
