Listen, I'm a newbie and I don't feel disrespected or ignored. I mean what should I expect? No one in here is going to go and start a conversation with a stranger on the street who happened to tell them what time it was the day before while riding the subway. So why should someone start online debates with a newbie who posted
one review or
one show? I know that some day I will be as respected as the current groupie and daredevil posters. I'm just waiting my turn in line. Until them I'll just enjoy the fact that I found such a great site and forum as the Hipbase.

Yeah, compared to some of the other forums I hang around the hipbase is extremely welcoming.
As far as the other couple of forums I do visit (car forums), the regulars are just out of control. A newb can't get a straight answer no matter how polite they are. I'm a regular at most of them myself and don't totally blame some of the people who reply the way they do because the same question(s) get asked on a daily basis, and a simple search would have given the newb all the information they were looking for. What the sad thing is, if you post a picture of your car on these car boards, all you hear is what everyone hates about it, and rarely what people like about it - everyone is so bitter and fat headed. But if someone posted something at the hipbase like a review of a new setlist/concert, people would respond to it maturely (for the most part), not bash the person who posted it and that's why people shouldn't afraid to post here.
The difference with the hipbase is that the topics are
usually about something that hasn't been discussed before, they aren't questioning the same thing over and over, because those are the ones that get people bitter. For example all of those polls by intothenight that we had to deal with last week got people's tempers going because the subject has been exhausted.

Being someone who was a newbie not too long ago I will say that it takes some getting used to on here.
There are some subjects that are taboo and if they come up people will jump all over you. I say let the person ask and if you don't want to talk about it don't talk about it. If Lance finds it offensive he'll delete it. Otherwise, if it's still there it's up for discussion.
Some people can be WAAAY too sensitive around here and sometimes they can be downright mean.
For the most part, we are a good group of people with varying opinions. Some of us are friends outside of the Hipbase. Like I'm friends with grooveless, ktown, kari, shannon, I mean the last three are staff on my site, but we've been friends on the HB for a while.
I pm with many other people at times too. Like Stephen, thompsongirl21 and a few others.
I look at it like this. This is the internet and it's a craps shoot when you go into any chatroom or forum. Either you're gonna connect or you're not.
At first I didn't connect here and even considered leaving because of it. We joke around alot and that can be miscontrued as being assholes. I know I once posted about Stephen Dame being a 'sick bastard because you can't figure out if he's joking or he's serious.' That was all in jest and I have been known for my sick deadpan over the top sense of humor. I usually use a

or  after I'm done.
Like I said in my letter to Gord Downie, the one I put in the book I gave him at the Clifton Park show a few weeks ago.
"I think you have inspired us Hip fans to strive to be passionate vocal individuals. I have seen many an argument over which album is the best or what you mean in a song while I'm reading the posts on the Hip Base, one of my favorite cyberhangouts. "
Please, jerkwerks, don't let a few assholes, and there are a few on here, ruin your experience on here. There are many good people on here. We of course all love the Hip and any Hip fan is a friend of mine.

I'm not naming names, but I will say. If I think they're a big enough asshole, I either avoid them or I have them on ignore.
Each to his/her own. Even if I think someone is an asshole on here, they are entitled to their opinion.

IMO, if you're going to suggest that there are "assholes" on this site, be brave enough to say who they are.
I think that another reason people may think that the Hipbase is cliquey, is that there are some members who have very strong opinions and are willing to express them (like me). New members (and some regular posters) sometimes interpret that as being mean (or dare I say, an asshole?).
I think everyone should browse some of the other popular fan forums and then they'll realize how good we have it here. :thumb:

I think that would just lead to personal flamethrowing. There are a few members on the board who irritate more of us than usual, and most of us have run up against the wall with them at least once. She was just making a general point about the community being friendly
on the whole.

Fair enough. It just irks me when people use such a strong negative term to descibe other members - a name that other members have called me on occasion - when it is based solely on
their interpretation of a post.
And oh yeah, I've never used the ignore feature, nor do I ever plan to.

I understand perfectly what you mean. Although I am a flaming asshole, it doesn't mean I can't pretend I'm not for the sakes of keeping the board as peaceful as possible. I think most of the instances of people exhibiting asshole-ish behaviour are isolated incidents. Very few people are consistently plagues on the community. Usually it's only as long as a certain issue or topic persists, and then things simmer down. So I wouldn't want to get caught claiming someone's an asshole, as someone did to you, in one moment in time when they may be acting out (not that I'm saying you were.) I'm just saying that by calling someone an asshole by name, you suddenly raise the stakes and it becomes more than an observation about their being an "asshole" at a specific moment.
(I haven't used the ignore feature either, because that's like condemning someone. Like I said, since my opinion of people changes over time [and it should], I wouldn't want to block them all the time.)

Internet groups are indeed a strange animal aren't they. A post that would sound obviously in jest if you were talking to someone can come across totally different in type. Even the smileys can be used one way by the poster and taken another way by the reader. I think it depends on where you are coming from both as poster and reader. I used to play alot of online games at Pogo and just as in real life, there are all kinds of communicators. You have your outgoing, jokey, flirty etc. people and you have your one and two word chatters. Nothing wrong with either, we're all different and we all have alot we can contribute. I think the best advice I've heard about posting in any online group is to read the group for at least 2 weeks before you post. Get a feel for the posters and the posts. And remember, we are all here to share our love for the Hip and I honestly feel this is the best online community around. I have had alot of dealings with fellow hip fans in my 15 or so years of Hip loving and some of my best Hip friends are people I have never even met.
Anyhow, another tip on online posting as in real life...no politics, no religion and for god's sake no discussion on the Hip's setlists! :p

On a lighter note, congrats to Neil aka groove on the 2000 post milestone(although that was a while ago, no one can keep up with that blistering pace), you're the first one as far as I know? .... from your playfully sardonic and facetious comments to your grounded insight to your massive essays that leave one feeling numb

, you truly are an elite among the hipbase, dude :thumb:
Neil for vice-president...no no....JUNIOR vice-president

HA! There truly is no moment left in contemporary life to which a Simpsons maxim cannot be applied.
What can I say...I'm addicted...three days a week I work nights and sleep days, and the rest of the week I crash in front of the computer...and no, I really have nothing better to do. I get my essays and reading done at work, so the rest of the week you guys are my source of enlightenment.
You embiggen my mind with your cromulent discussion. Thanks.

Hmmmm...high degree of hip knowledge...technically and technologically skilled...communicates directly and succinctly...commits own time, resources, and energy to build and maintain a Hip-only Bit Torrent tracker...same-same with a companion Hip site to further enhance
everyone's enjoyment, awareness, access to all their Hip needs and whims...
Damn, I only hope that one day I evolve into such an asshole! No doubt about it...I gotta get a new dictionary!

I've had everything from political arguments, engaging conversations, new friendships created, old friends re-acquainted and some really funny exchanges on this forum.
I don't consider anyone an "asshole," nor have I seen any specific "cliques" excluding folks from discussions... I would hope newbies don't feel they have to "earn" there way into the forum.
The common interest should be enough to make everybody feel welcome, and if sometimes things get heated, it's only because passion occasionally trumps reason.
I think Lance and the Mod's have done a wondeful job of creating a welcoming atmosphere for newbies and us crazy, Hip-is-our-crack fans.

i just wanted to say that i enjoy coming on here to find out info about the band, people's oppinion on certain topics (even if i don't agree with them). I think it's fair to say that by reading this forum we know that certain people have certain characteristics and although we may not agree with them it opens our eyes to new ideas and new thoughts on ways of thinking. I'll read the post if i'm interested in the subject not because who wrote it or how many posts they have. I know some people come on here all the time and just read and hardly post anything, it might just be in their personality that doesn't make their oppinions any less than others.
Enjoy the music, enjoy the conversation.
