These people have no shame. The sad part is that all her fans will believe this horse crap excuse and will still worship their idol. I know Gord said there's room for everybody in music but there's not. People like Jessica and Ashlee don't belong in music. They belong in a grade 4 classroom so they can learn their abc's and not be dumbasses. I hope that both these sisters crash and burn and something awful happens to them. I'm not a bad guy but they deserve it. They've been stealing money and they must be punished for it. They are no better than the tv evangelist scumbags of the world. Of course the only people worse than them is the stupid ass fans who pay money and don't even realize they're getting ripped off. I'd say when you pay 50 bucks or more to see a woman in concert dancing and fake singing you are getting ripped off. All the power to the brainless little teens who don't realize that when they turn 19 they are going to wonder why they wasted all those years being suckers to the marketing ploy.

I think the band did the right thing... what else could they do? They drowned out the vocals from the first song by replaying the first song... my favourite in that whole video take is the look on the bass players face... kind of a "Oh Shit, Ashlee's toasted, this can't go anywhere good, and we'll all be unemployed soon" look.

If Ashlee wanted to really sing, she had her chance. The band was there playing live music and all little prissy Ashlee had to do was sing into the mic. What a waste! She took the spot on SNL that could have gone to a band with little qualities like talent, integrity, class, and soul.

When the only musical guests on the show weren't Hip Hop moguls or corporate manufactured Pop Icons? Don't get me wrong, I like Hip Hop and corporate manufactured Pop, but look at what they represent. The bands used to mean something... they were rebellious, unique, dangerous. The show was dangerous! And now, if you look at the musical guests as representative of the show... well... what do you see? I see pandering to the lowest common denominator. this is the greatest thing ive seen all week, blame the band for playing the wrong song, well vocals are clearly being heard and its not her singing them. Its all the bands fault, what a joke, and people pay money to see this lying dumbass.

There's plenty of room for the Ashlee Simpson's of this world in music. We need them. They perform a vital service.

Not only do they provide music for people too musically challenged to enjoy actual music, but they allow us to recognize good music when we hear it.

Without stupid, we would never recognize smart. Without tacky, we'd never recognize tasteful. Without lame, we'd never recognize good.

We NEED the stupid, the tacky, and the lame. And we need useless manufactured pop stars who lip-sync their way through performances. Otherwise, we'd risk reviling decent music.

Everyone needs a benchmark. Be happy we have Ashlee.

we don`t need shit like that....what really pisses me off is that someone like her is making millions for essentially doing nothing while guys like me work 60 hrs a week outside just to live month to month....if we really need shit like that then society is WAY more fucked up than i originally thought....end rant :x

I think an interesting question coming out of this is: Will anyone back her up?

Apparently, lip-synching (or "back-up tracking" as they're calling this) is very common on Leno and Letterman and hasn't been a rarity on SNL either.

If you've seen a Superbowl half-time show or singing of "God Bless America" during the MLB play-offs, you also know that this isn't a new thing. It seems that live TV appearances are taken for what they are: "Promotional Opportunites" that MUST come off perfect.

Actually singing is made even harder when you add in an elaborate choregraphed routine...

So, will somebody come out and say: "Look, this is how the industry works, this girl is NOT alone, and people should just be made aware that she's not going to be the last..."

...Or will they let her hang?

I hope they let her hang. I have more respect for Roseanne as a singer than I do for the Simpson dumbasses. At least Roseanne really sang.

I find your arguement very interesting, and I can definitely see where you're coming from. But we don't necessarily need shit to make something good, and not only that, you have to wonder, just because shit exists, does that make the non-shitty that much better? I mean, is John Kerry that good of a Presidential Candidate simply because George W. is an idiot? I digress...

You claim that without shitty music we wouldn't recognize great music. But the problem with this is, it causes limitations. If The Tragically Hip make a better record than Ashlee Simpson, fine then, job done. But then, since they've done better, is that to say that's the best? I mean, what if there were no Ashlee Simpson's, just, for example, excellent live rock and roll bands. Would our musical world not be better off? The standards would continue to be raised, great bands would continue to haver to top themselves and write better records, and re-create themselves live in concert. Instead now, bands can sit back and say, "Well, hey, at least we're not part of the Ashlee Simpson's of the world, and we play instruments, write our own songs." But that doesn't necessarily make that band any good. Musically, culturally, hell, politically as well, the standards must continually be raised, evolve for the better, and I'm sure as a collective we'll all get better and learn from this positive evolution. You said without stupid, we'd never recognize smart. Well why can't we just have smart and smarter, instead of stupid and smart?
I agree with your point that we need Ashlee Simpson's (As Gord said at the I&I "God love those bands, singing and dancing their hearts out, doing what they love to do") We, as fans of The Tragically Hip identify with one aspect of the band, whatever it is, the lyrics, the music, the image, whatever. It makes us happy. And we also, as fans, have no right to say that our love for the music is more valid than a thirteen year old's love of Ashlee Simpson. I guess I think that bands like The Tragically Hip and Ashlee Simpson should be categorized as far away as possible within the realm of "music".

Not only was what happened Saturday incredibly entertaining, it raises other questions, I'd be interested to hear what everyone else thinks...
