Okay... then why even bother with a poll?
Why not just a Greatest Band Of All Time Thread?

NMAS - 10-15-2004
The one band that Doesn't belong is the Hip. Queen should be there. The Guess Who should be there long before the Hip.

The Horrible Esthete - 10-15-2004

Allman Borthers Band: Yes.

Yeah, hmmm.... we're into the error of catalogues and lists.
Has anybody actually thought out the criteria for nomination to the canon here? And is there some point to establishing who can be on the list and who can't?

Well, tastes are tastes, and you are entitled to your own, but you cannot argue with the fact that the D. Allman / D. Betts tandem deserve serious consideration for the greatest 1-2 guitar punch (as far as playing skill & talent) in the history of rock 'n' roll. And on top of
that you have a legendary songwriter, remarkable pianist, and taleted vocalist with a wonderfully textured, distinctive voice in Greg Allman.
This band
never gets its just deserves.......

Talent wise the Allmans are right at the top.

Who should be there Horrible? Have you even listened to The Guess Who?

The Who: Yes, of course - Daltry is the epitome of a rock band frontman & excellent vocalist; Townshend is a top-notch writer, ferocious guitarist, and versatile instrumentalist; Entwistle is
always cited by nearly every knowledgeable bassist I meet as one of the fastest, most creative and precise bassists to ever play rock music - dig up some Who and listen closely to the bass - it's mind-blowing how he uses the entire fretboard; Moon is the only drummer's name I've ever heard contemporaries mention in the same breath as John Bonham.
Guess Who: Yes, I've listened to a shitload of GW, and I truly love alot of it. But they just don't make the cut here, for two main reasons:
Member Turnover - A total of 13 guys had played at some point for this band, which is just too much inconsistency. This directly realtes to my 2nd point which is.....
Lack of Renown Individual Talent - Only two of those 13 members are the least bit notable - Burton Cummings (one of the very best voices in rock) and Randy Bachman , and Bachman split halfway through (1970) to form BTO.
Sorry, NMAS.....despite cranking out some fabulous songs, Guess Who falls a little short on credentials.....

Yet, you think the Allman Brothers should be on the list despite the fact they've had SIXTEEN guys play at some point, and two, maybe three, would be considered notable.
FULL DISCLOSURE: I'm neutral on both. Just got a good chuckle when reading your "criteria" post shortly after reading your "why the Allman Brothers belong" post.

the allman brothers? gimme a break! as for the guess who, they are a great band, but i don't think they're even as good as the hip, so i don't see how they could make the list.

I was trying to be fair. Bottom line: Greg & Dwane Allman & Dicky Betts have / had more talent than all 13 members of Guess Who combined, the Allman's discography is much more voluminous, yet the percentage of worthless material is far smaller than that of Guess Who.
EDIT: Just so we're clear, my main reasoning is the point that the Allmans had one of the best guitar duos ever. Randy Bachman doesn't hold a candle to D. Allman or Betts. Hell, Bachman isn't even close to being as talented as the D. Allman's most recent replacement - Derek Trucks. Furthermore, I can't name ONE GW composition that rivals the musicianship or soul in Blue Sky, Jessica, Dreams, Midnight Rider, Statesboro Blues, Aint Wastin Time No More, Whipping Post, One Way Out or a score of other songs. And one last point regarding 'turnover', the glaring difference between the two is that the two founding members of GW left their band after only three years, while the Allman Brothers Band bears the name of its founding members, one of whom still leads the band, while the other was a member up until his untimely death.

Totally agree with the above post!
D. Allman & Betts were incredible together.
Original bassist Berry Oakley deserves a mention as well.

I agree the Allmans rock, I'm gonna listen to them right now. What about Lynard Skynard. I know they are a complete mockery of what they once were, but come on...freebird!
Which prompts yet another poll...best rock anthem of all time....let the synapses start firing.
It goes on and on and on...
