I understand the appeal of NOIS, but I think it has more to do with mod mentality and excitement than it does the actual song. When there's a room full of people cheering, most folk feel pretty damn stupid if they're not yelling along with the crowd. There is a certain electricity at a concert when the entire room is into what's being played. I love that feeling, but I think it's time that another song step into the spotlight.

The Hip can play whatever the hell they want to play! NOIS has been played to death but it's still fun to listen to live and it is one of their signature songs. If someone doesn't like it, that's a personal preference but I can't stand all these crazy fans that hate it! I hate the people who try to prove that they are the "BEST HIP" fans and only want to hear obsure tracks that were never released and old songs like "Blonde Solid" in concert. Give me a break! Stop trying to prove you guys are somehow better fans by slagging the song as only a song for "moderate" fans. I'm a huge, borderline obsessed Hip fan and wouldn't die if NOIS wasn't played but I love it when it's played. Enough already with the attitude that somehow it's wrong for the Hip to play their "hit singles" in concert!

ok so what if they play nois every show it is a great rant song for gord or a song to introduce a new song so why hate it if you don't like then run around with you flag spill your beer on the person next to you, run to the bathroom , look around and be glad that the hip are still together.

for the last 5 or 6 (maybe even more) years the NOIS jams have been weak. when was the last time we saw an NOIS jam turn in to a new song? i can't even remember.

personally, i think that Nautical should be the new jam song. they could jam out the middle, slow down the music and then gord could jump in to the "then the phone rings" line. that would be a whole lot more enjoyable for me, than having to sit through nois again.

1. i NEVER, ever, ever bring a flag to a hip show
2. i don't drink at the show
3. what the hell does the band playing NOIS have to do with them still being together?

Definite agreement here. I love the song, but all tunes need a rest every now and then - even if they are a staple. I disagree that it should be permanently retired, but let's not completely ruin this awesome song.

Well said, TTL! Here's a thought: if anyone is tired of NOIS, why not shelve yourselves for a few tours and let the rest of us enjoy the show and the forum without lame threads that totally disrespect the band in general, and Gord S., in particular. If you don't like the sets, don't go to the shows!

The best argument that I can see for the every-night presence of NOIS in the setlist is that for some people it may be their one and only Hip concert and they might feel ripped off if they didn't hear it. That, to me, is a valid argument. But I think it can be countered by the fact that the Hip have a bunch of other A1 concert material that can take its place, if not exactly "replace" it. If you went to a concert and heard Blow at High Dough, Courage, Little Bones, 100th Meridian, and/or Ahead by a Century would you feel ripped off? Is hearing a lacklustre rendition of NOIS better (and that's the real problem, isn't it--recent versions of NOIS have sometimes lacked lustre. I don't think anyone would complain about it if they were tearing it up each and every time out).

It's like poor R.E.M. having to close every single concert with It's the End of the World As We Know It, night after night, even though their back catalog has a zillion amazing heavyweight showstoppers.

There's no way they will "put it off" like they should because every bootleg ever made reveals that the opening notes of NOIS are drowned out by a roar from the crowd. Thousands of people who haven't seen the Hip much love to hear it.
