I found it!!!!

To quote the infamous Gord Downie, "I felt it was weird for the people whose town it was (to see the Canadian flags waving). One of these guys had a little plastic Canadian flag and kept waving it in this small club. I went over to him and rolled it up and handed it back to him. I did it in a way, I thought, that was respectful. The Canadian way, according to me. Well, his friend went crazy. He was a big strapping drunk kid who could have torn my arms off. He started screaming at me 'Fuck you, fuck you.' He said 'I didn't like what you did to that flag. You want to be a fucking American?' I said 'You're acting more like an American than I am.' I don't want to give Americans a bad rap, but if there's a country that takes its flag
seriously, it's America. I felt strange. As a fellow Canadian, I was
saving his life. There were a lot of Scots there that wanted to kill
him."

Ignoring for a second the fact that the Canadian flag is not a play thing; it is not a rag to be dragged around in a druken stupor, dropped on the ground, stepped on, have beer spilled on, used to wipe the sweat off your brow, etc, etc, its not that its rude, it just doesn't make sense to me.

What does patriotism have to do with the Hip? They play great music, Gordy comes up with great lyrics and yes, some of their songs relate to Canada, but at the end of the day its a rock band; not Canada incarnate.

From my personal experience, I've never seen Americans with the flag wrapped around them like it was a cape or something like that in public places. I have seen ALOT of americans wearing shirts that have the american flag on them that proclaim their pride to be Americans. This to me is different and normal behavior in any citizen of the world.Sometimes though it seems excessive to me when an American is wearing every conceivable piece of clothing that has the flag awash in it. It's better to have a quiet modest pride about your nation that a jingoistic excessive display of patriotism.

ahh a topic true to my heart......i once saw a canadian(presumably) wearing a canadian flag as a diaper. I proceeded to tell him what a douche bag he was and that he wasnt honoring his country by subjecting its flag to swamp ass. waving a country's flag at a concert is stupid, but one time i did bring my buffalo sabres flag to a concert in cleveland( odeon '02) because half the concert goers were from buffalo and it was pretty funny to see everybody go crazy when i whipped it out.

As long as other people aren't affected, I don't see a problem with the flags. BUT, it's not just the flag. I felt like killing almost every fan at the Gord Downie & TCOM show I saw in Charlottetown. The drunken idiots who kept calling for "Killerwhaletank" and shoving everyone were pissing me off. I'm all for girating, or dancing, or grooving to the music AS LONG AS YOU ARE NOT RUNNING INTO PEOPLE IN THE PROCESS!

hey tragicallymike, i was at that show, and man that flag was annoying.....as was the guys from Canada who thought they'd be cool waving the Canadian flag in front of the band, blocking everyone's view.. by the way didn't you guys/idiots from Buffalo get into a scrap after the show on the street, when somebody hit a passing car???? yeah, real cool......

the flag wasnt in anyones way because i was standing at the bar with it and not holding it in everyones face.... and no we didnt get into any fight on the street at all you idiot......actually we just went to a bar....could have been any number of buffalonians that did that.

so why would you bring a Buffalo Sabres flag to a Hip concert in Cleveland? is that to piss off all the Cleveland Barons fans??? You know how hockey mad Cleveland is.....

i just wanted to see how many people were from buffalo.....and judging by the reaction it was more than half the people there. I didnt hold it up the whole concert......just during the 100th meridian, but you should remember that seeing as how you think you know what i had for lunch that day.

Good point! I agree with most of you here. The flag waving and overt patriotism seems to follow the Hip around wherever they play, and I know for a fact that it annoys them more often than not. Personally I think it's ridiculous that people feel the need to sing the national anthem at Hip shows. This is rock n' roll, people. It ain't the freakin' Olympics. The interesting thing is that there are plenty of other bands who write songs about Canada (Rheostatics, The Weakerthans, Blue Rodeo, Sam Roberts, Sarah Harmer) and you never see people waving the flag or singing the anthem at their shows. For some reason, people only do these things at Hip concerts.

My thoughts exactly. I saw the Hip in San Francisco a few years back, and it was an amazing show. But there was one guy who kept yelling "play killerwhaletank Gordie! Play killerwhale tank!!!" He did this throughout the entire show and my buddy and I just wanted to punch him. I think Gord did too. He had a look on his face like, "buddy, we're never playing that song again, so get used to it."
