You folks are luckie to be debating which is the most overrated/ overplayed hip song. Down in the south US we dont get any hip on the radio. So i guess i can i can't enter the debate.

Take care.

hands down...FIREWORKS

but Courage, Greasy Jungle, ABAC, and M@W aren't too far behind.

NIOS by far. i have NEVER liked that song.

arg. it really, really, needs to be retired. they are so many better songs they could be playing on a regular basis.

Is the question overplayed or overrated? I don't see how NOIS can be considered overrated. It is possibly the band's best song period. Now, I agree that it can become unnerving to hear it or any song too many times.

On the other hand I see someone put Greasy Jungle. To be overrated, a lot of people have to be talking about how great the song is and I don't recall Greasy Jungle being talked about as a "classic" by too many people. I do really like the song but I don't hear a lot of people mentioning it as a "great" Hip song.

In one way, it's a bit of an odious topic but on the other I'm not naive enough to think everything the Hip do is great. I'll answer the question the best I can and say that "Courage" is the most overrated. I like the song but I don't think it is the #1 Hip song.

Just in closing, I'd like to say that overall I think the band is underrated, even in Canada. They are called the most popular band in Canada but not given the credit they deserve for their music. They are not just a bar band with a few drunken fans, they've made some pretty creative and original music in my mind and don't get the recognition they should. I think if they sold 20 thousand records and were an indepedent Canadian band they would be getting huge critical praises. It's like The Dears and how they are called the best band in many reviews, I think if they sold more records it would change the reviews quite a bit. Just my opinion.

Ahh I love Trouble at the henhouse. That was some summer!!
For me though... I will go with Fireworks.

Have to agree with Fireworks...although never a big fan of Music at Work either.

- Stephen Dame - 05-25-2004

Yeah, I love M@W too... but now that you mention it, I've never been a big fan of Fireworks...

Somebody should start an "under rated" thread to send us on a positive tip... (As Snoop would say)

- thedarkcanuck - 05-25-2004

another midnight has my vote as an underrated tune

- BulletRiddled - 05-26-2004

M@W is an overrated song on an underrated CD.

can someone define what they mean by "overrated"? this has become "what's your favourite/least favourite song" thread. overated in what terms? who defines what's classic or not? Fireworks? a great song by the Hip, both lyrically and musically, the middle part where Johnny goes nuts (especailly live) is musically great! Courage? for sure its overplayed on the radio, but it did introduce a lot of people to the Hip, so people can relate to it. someone set some criteria, then we'll meausure the songs against it....

- opiated - 05-26-2004

the original criteria i had in my mind was just a song that the "masses" went crazy for; compared to songs that the "masses" had no idea were around...my choice for Courage for most overrated was simple....(although there's no simple explanation...)...i personally thought there were songs up to and including FC that were far superior to that tune...it got wayyy too much radio airplay, and i never understood the craziness it sent the crowd into..i think that the chorus in the song is boring, and gimme "lookin for a place to happen" over that anyday....

- thecompletist - 05-27-2004

Ya Music @ Work is a poppy song for the Hip...

over-rated or just over-played? - abrown - 05-27-2004

Don't know if these qualify as over-rated, but they definitely qualify as over-played, in my opinion

Springtime in Vienna (echoing posts by s few others here)
Fireworks (also saw this mentioned already)
Music @ Work (also mentioned)

- definitely a pattern among those three.

The MOST overrated and overplayed Hip song is by far and away

Bobcaygeon - man I really don't like this song

- das_hips - 05-27-2004

Simple as Salt... Blow At High Dough... I still hear it on the radio every second or third day, and listen to it specifically for the 'radio' atmosphere, but on UTH I skip it without second thought... Fireworks and Giftshop; if I actually heard them on the radio it would send me into an epileptic shock... so much energy in those songs, such little play time...
