The first time I heard "Locked", I thought the words were

"I found a place, it's dark and it's erotic......"

I remember thinking that it was a cool line because it played on the idea of the subject acting out some repressed dark fantasy. Some kind of perverse sexual fulfilment if you will. The idea of dumping the body in some shady woods or a marsh or something added to that thrill for him.

until i read the lyrics in the booklet i always thought it was


"don't say people lose before overtime anymore"


which IMO wouldn't be too bad of a lyric at all...

Most common mis-heard lyric:

"Trapped in the morgue, screaming out Macbeth"

The real lyric makes much more sense of course, and deals with the Curse of "The English Play." I think there's a whole thread on that one around here somewhere...

Not to quibble, but the seasoned theatre-person in me feels the need to mention that it's "The Scottish Play". And I think there is a thread. Pretty funny stories in there too. :mrgreen:

'When the sunlight hits the olive oil, don't hesitate' is a great description of the creative process. You've got to act on those moments of clarity and inspiration (analagous to the moment when the sun shines through the olive oil and casts gorgeous greens on the wall).

I'm currently playing "Angus, the surly bagpipe" in our university production of "A Brief History of Haggis" and so due to superstition, I can't say "Scottish." Smile

Hrmmm. I've never heard that way, I know you can't say the *name* of The Scottish Play, but "The Scottish Play" is an acceptable substitute. To each his own. Break a leg!

When I first 50 Mission Cap, I thought Gord was saying "nifty fishin cap". About a year ago I was listening to the radio and they were doing a show on the top 100 misheard lyrics, and they mentioned that one as well. I was glad to know I wasn't the only person, who at some point, thought he said "nifty fishin cap".

Excellent point, KWT.....this is perhaps the most prominent theme in Gord's lyrics - those instances of artistic inspiration, the process of incorporating these inspirations into art or cobbling art from them, and the musings on / cognizance of artistry or artisanship - some songs entirely focus on this theme alone, like Membership, for example...

Random like a bad cartoon was what was posted as the lyrics just after the single was released on Hipbase. With no printed lyrics available, that is indeed what it sounded like!! Also, when Gord says "but" the world is just not the same on Heaven, Hipbase had that listed as "fuck". Pretty funny I thought.
