The Album Artwork is horrendous. Looks like something that would have been released in the 80's and not the year 2000.
That aside, I think its a decent album and agree with others that it could have benefited from being cut short a couple tracks.
Listened to it on the ride in to work today and must say its pretty pretty pretty good.
Might take another (almost) 20 years for this album to get its appreciation.

I'm with you on this one - I never skip a song on this album; always loved it, the strangeness of it.
And yes, the album artwork is truly dreadful, no idea what they were thinking.
I saw them at the Shepherds Bush Empire here in the UK on the Music@Work tour. Gord introducing 'Lake Fever' with, "This is a song about making love on the beach under the shadow of the yellow flag" has always stuck in my mind

Agreed, I absolutely love this album front to back. It's not my favourite album of theirs, but it's near the top. I think it's their most underrated album by far.

First few times hearing MMAW and before reading the lyrics, I thought the line was "and when the sunlight hits the honour bar, don't hesitate". I thought it was such a great line about a band on tour, waking up in hotel room after hotel room, living that lifestyle, on the road, putting their music to work.
I still like my line better

I don't think there is any "hate" in the above posts. The easiest comparisons to make are to the band's prior work, and in that case it falls short. If someone wants to make the argument that M@W stands shoulder-to-shoulder with anything in the UTH through PP run, I'd be happy to hear it. Each of those albums has at least 5 stone cold classics on it. I don't believe the same can be said for M@W, but that doesn't mean I don't like it or enjoy many moments on it. I do.

Got this CD for $4.99 in a discount bin at Future Shop in 2003.
Gordie dancing in front of the Xerox on MuchMoreMusic is the earliest Hip memory I have.

I’m going to post longer thoughts on each album as I have more time during/after the holidays, but I had a few immediate thoughts on this one to share.
Things with this album kind of got fucked up from the start. If I recall, the band had planned on taking a train from Chicago to New Orleans with gear and to write and record along the way. That plan ended up not happening. I think the plan of the train ride would have helped this record achieve a thematic and sound focus and cohesion that was lacking.
If I recall this record leaked early and the band was pissed about it. There was a steady decline in record sales (which would continue) compared to previous albums. By only releasing one music video it seemed like the band kind of gave up promoting this record which I had always attributed to the early leak.

Underrated as fuck.
I owned this album before I became Hip obsessed. Discovering music, I would def buy CDs before hearing the album (remember those days? Flip phones and iPods?), so I had M@W and UTH before my 2004 awakening to the greatest rock show on Earth etc. etc.
M@W is the 3rd Hip album I fell in love with, because I def wasn't really into the first time I bought. $4.99. Obv it was going into the collection during a CD shopping spree one day.
I loved it though. Lots of these songs all seem like well loved classics to me.
The opening run 1 - 5
1 My Music At Work
2 Tiger The Lion
3 Lake Fever
4 Putting Down
5 Stay
That's a super strong start IMO. Misunderstood as fuck in 2000. Same as Binaural.
It wasn't just a new year, or a new decade, new millenium! Pop music wiping rock off the radio. MuchMusic relegated it's actual Music content tot MuchMoreMusic in favor of Pimp My Ride. And also, what the fuck is the internet?
One of the only Hip songs I have no love for is The Bastard.
I enjoy everything else on this album.
Also, people are talking lots about the leak. One of the first major albums to ever leak apparently? In 2000, I'd be pissed... because who could have predicted exactly what the best moves were for the music industry and the internet Anyways, album leaks happen all the time, and I'm 99% positive that We Are The Same 'leaked', and at that point, 9 years later, that day was to be expected and anticipated. Honestly, in the year 2000 I'd be surprised if lots of people even knew how to download the entire Hip album. What happened anyways? Anyone care to share? Did you have to seach each song 1 by 1 on Napster or what? Did you have to wait 3 hours and nobody could telephone?

I was lucky enough to have a tech-savvy friend at the time who downloaded the album and burned me a CD copy.

As I recall, while I used Napster occasionally over dial-up (56k!), I'm pretty sure that someone had a zip file on their ftp server that telenetted to to grab it. Often I would leave the modem connected overnight when I was downloading something I really wanted and just hope for the best.
