Totally. I admit I didn't fully discover some of those bands until I was about 13 or 14. I remember my friend's older brother had a massive record and tape collection. We used to go into his room and "borrow" stuff, take it home, make a cassette copy and then return it. Through his brother we discovered R.E.M., Midnight Oil, Concrete Blonde, Replacements, Pixies, early Red Hot Chili Peppers, and of course lots of Canadian stuff like the Hip, 54-40, TPOH, Grapes of Wrath, Northern Pikes, Blue Rodeo, etc..

1980s hair metal -- Motley Crue, Def Leppard, Ratt, Quiet Riot, Judas Priest, Van Halen -- takes me back to grades 6-8, a Walkman on the school bus or back of the mini-van. Grade 8 discovered REM with Reckoning and musical taste started to shift (weirdly, it was a neighbor who introduced me to REM, who was huge into Metallica Kill Em All). When the mood strikes, I'll still throw on a hair metal album and rock out -- plus is remains the pinnacle of "pump up music" for all sports.

I was into those bands as well. Especially Van Halen, Scorpions, and Twisted Sister. Living in the States in the 80s, I was of course addicted to MTV, and those bands always had great videos. I still love this one:

That's also the first REM album I owned. I moved backward from there. This was REM's first proper "rock" record, or at least their most accessible to that point. That made it easy for my teenage brain to reconcile with the type of music I was into at the time, which was a lot of classic rock and hair metal. I don't think I could have gotten into REM if someone had given me a copy of "Murmur" or "Life's Rich Pageant" at that time. Those albums weren't "rock" enough for me. I only came to appreciate the earlier stuff later on.

I still count "I Remember California" (love the stream of conscience poetry on it), and "Orange Crush" among my favorite REM tunes. Love cranking the latter one.

In the 80's if a band wore leather, spandex and hairspray, I was into them! I lot of the bands I listened to back then I still like, but there are a number I would be ashamed to put in print.

I know. Mostly B sides that never get attention are his best. The singles are all similar and only add to his rough, redneck persona. The proof is in "Midnight Ferry" - give it a spin!

Fully agree. American Idiot was one of the best releases of the 2000's and holds its own extremely well against any concept album of any decade.

I've seen Green Day about three times now, they put on a great show, really know how to entertain a crowd from young to old.
