Wow! I honestly didn't expect a new album from them until next year at the earliest, so a fall release would be a really nice surprise. Robby's description of the album is certainly encouraging. I enjoyed NFPA, and I still think it's one of the better records they've made in recent years. But I've always secretly hoped that they'd eventually revisit the darker, more atmospheric Day for Night-ish side to them. Here's hoping the new album delivers.

I liked NFPA a lot as well. Very strong, urgent, impassioned stuff, sadly underrated by most of the fan-base, as far as I can tell. But does the article come out and say, 'this record sounds like Day for Night?' I wouldn't describe DFN as 'trancey,' for instance (well, except maybe for 'Yawning or Snarling,' one of that record's more underrated tracks). Nor would I use the word 'different' to describe a record that sounds like what most fans regard as their best album. So I'm just suggesting caution before we go into this record with the expectation that it'll be DFN: The Sequel 8)
(Actually, as a general rule I think expectations can be a big problem with a long-standing bands like the Hip. So often a band's past is allowed to crush whatever it's doing in the present, as fans can't or won't listen with open ears. I wish more Hip fans would just relax and allow the band to move around and try different things, rather than measuring everything by the standard of Fully Completely or whatever. From this point of view, the new record will be whatever it is; its merits are not to be determined by the degree to which it sounds like X or Y of their previous work).

Great post, and I agree. I should clarify that when I mentioned Day for Night in my post, I simply meant more the general tone and feel of that record, which for me was a little darker than their previous work, and had a real smokey, dream-like feel to it...if that make any sense. I'm not asking for a sequel to Day for Night. But a heavier, darker-edged new record with a trancey vibe? Sign me up.

Fair enough. I don't know about 'heavier' - I'm always leery of the Hip titling into Prog Rock/Metal territory - but the Hip have always done 'darker-edged' very well. In fact, Downie is at his best, in my opinion, when he' writing songs about predation, disaster, desperation, and doom. I like your description of DFN. If only the production had been a little more bass-heavy, it'd really be something. A great record.

I am guilty of this,I was a huge fan from 90-00 and lost interest because the sound was not the same to the standard and stupid expectations i had of them.Only in 2006 did i start falling back in love with them funnily enough when i found this forum,got the heads up on the belleville empire theatre show and got my hypo box set signed,a casual beer and convo with the boys in the open parking lot out back.Lucky for me right around the time world container was coming out I had the previous 3 albums to listen to at the same,I truly was in Hip heaven and still really have not come down,I been to 40 shows since then,and absolutely loved wats and nfpa.Its like finding your old high school sweetheart years later.lol

Rob's description of the album sounds pretty exciting. Hopefully the songs are in the vein of "At Transformation" (to use a recent reference), with that darker, heavier feeling, which is The Hip at their best, imho.

Yea, they do sound really similar. That probably explains why it was left off the original album and then rearranged for the recording of Day for Night. I have a bootleg from 2002 where Steve Berlin plays tenor sax on that song, and it's absolutely mind blowing.

If the album is actually being released this year as that article stated, then my money is on early November, which in record sale terms is still considered fall, or the "4th quarter" as the labels call it. They can capitalize on the Christmas shopping season and boost their sales. The album is in the can, so I don't see why they wouldn't get it out before the end of the year. Unless they actually meant next fall...which would really suck.
