Re: Pearl Jam-The Fixer - sherpahigh - 09-16-2009

Riot Act at #1! madness.

Re: Pearl Jam-The Fixer - direwolf74 - 09-17-2009

After absorbing the album over the last three days, I'd say it's the best thing they've done in years. I loved "The Fixer" from the first moment I heard it. I think it's a killer song and a great lead-off single. Other highlights for me:

Unthought Known
Gonna See My Friend
Got Some
Just Breathe
Amongst the Waves
Supersonic
Force of Nature

...aw hell, the entire album is great.

Two things that really stand out for me on this one: Eddie's vocals and Matt Cameron's drums. This might be the best singing Vedder has ever done on a record. He's got such a powerful voice, but he doesn't always use his full range in the studio. But he really hits it out of the park on this album. And Cameron's drum sound is absolutely perfect. I'm not a sound engineer and I have no idea how Brendan O'Brien records drums, but the guy always seems to know exactly how percussion should sound on a rock record. I'm thinking the Hip should seriously consider dumping Bob Rock and giving this guy a call. Anyways, here's how I'd rank PJ's work:

1. Yield
2. Vs.
3. Backspacer
4. Ten
5. Vitalogy
6. Avocado
7. No Code
8. Riot Act
9. Binaural

Re: Pearl Jam-The Fixer - sherpahigh - 09-17-2009

wow, already up in third!

I actually dig the music in the Fixer but I just can't get over the "put a little fixin' on it". :x

Other than that I'm finding I like this one quite a bit. Just Breath is fantastic. I was listening to the album last weekend giving my 3 month old a bottle when that one was playing... great tune. I really like The End, Unthought Known, Supersonic and Amongst The Waves as well. Johnny Guitar's pretty cool as well but I wish they would have stretched it out a bit more.

Not sure how it'll settle over time though it's definitely the best thing they've done in years. FWIW my ranking would be something like this:

No Code
Yield
Vs.
Ten
Vitalogy
Backspacer
Binaural
Riot Act
Avocado

Dunno how you guys can rank an album against classics from 10 years ago that's we've only been listening to for a week. Takes at least 6 months to absorb, I'd say...

Re: Pearl Jam-The Fixer - Lizard King - 09-17-2009

No Code at #1??

Insanity!!!!

No way man, that record is brilliant. It's their Day for Night.

i must've missed the memo on the rules of album ranking. i would agree with you in that it takes some time to absorb some albums and ya, where it fits in against their past work could very well change. but as of right now... that's how i'd rank them. :rambo:

I would argue that "Yield" is their Day for Night. But maybe that's just me.

Re: Pearl Jam-The Fixer - Summiteer - 09-17-2009

I always thought Binaural was their DFN....

Re: Pearl Jam-The Fixer - Lizard King - 09-17-2009

Phantom Power is the Hip's Yield

chew on that one for a bit..........

and for the record when i threw up that "ranking" list, i was just listing my favorite pj albums to listen to, not what there best albums ever are in some sacred order i spent hours scrutinizing over, but this is fun too..

let the debate rage on...

Re: Pearl Jam-The Fixer - aaronck - 09-18-2009

Awesome-gotta grab the Calgary show, it was an amazing day

Re: Pearl Jam-The Fixer - direwolf74 - 09-18-2009

I'm listening to the Calgary show right now and it sounds great. Almost like being there all over again. What an amazing day that was. This reminds me, are the Hip ever going to put up more "Live From the Vault" shows for purchase on their site?? They really need to take a page out of Pearl Jam's book and realize how beneficial the digital bootleg program is, for both the fans AND the band.
