Re: Gord and his Hanky - sherpa - 06-13-2009

I think it is an extension of the egg shaker and banana shaker he used to toss around stage - something to do with your hands. I have a feeling for Gord the hanky - apart from a necessity considering the amount he sweats - is a rhythm thing. Might as well throw a sweaty towel in the audience who will likely keep it then have a garbage can full of waste at the end of the show.
That being said it is definitely more distracting than an egg shaker or banana...

Hankies are the new bananas

In Cleveland, between songs the second set (I believe), Gord made it a point to address the crowd and said something to this effect (definitely not verbatim):

"Ladies, I'm aiming at you [referring to his crowd-ward hanky tosses], but I'm sorry if they aren't getting to you. Guys, if you know whats good for you, let the girls get them, or if you get one, give it to a girl".
He did the same thing at Artpark.
If you go to 4:25 of this video you can hear his rant.

ha ha cool link thanks!!

gord can do whatever he likes

it's what to do with your hands when you arent singing

Re: Gord and his Hanky - VioletlightHeron - 06-15-2009

The question I'd ask Gord, if I ever got the chance and he wouldn't get pissed off about the question, is why did he move away from doing rants during the songs and towards the hankies and microphone stands. My feeling is he either felt the rants were getting old or he felt it was distracting from the music.

I have no problem with Gord's antics on stage, whether they involve rants, doing the mic stand thing, or the hankies.

Don't you think that part of the problem is that many of us are seeing multiple shows, and in that respect, the hankie thing is "getting old"?

As much of a creative artist as he is, I don't think that he loses sleep every night trying to come up with something new to do, every night.

I'd love a sweaty hankie, so if anyone would like to donate one, please send me a PM Smile

.

I haven't seen multiple shows this time around, I actually went quite a few years in between shows. I have seen 25 shows dating back to 89 so I have seen the evolution of Gord as a front man. the hankie thing was tired even before it started. I understand that he is a sweater and needs them, but to be doing what he is doing is distracting to the show.

I think that was asked and answered during the Buffalo News video interview. The answer escapes me right now hough.

If that's the case, then it's working - at least two pairs were thrown on stage at The Fillmore last night! :thumb:

Re: Gord and his Hanky - thebends - 06-15-2009

Gord has hyperhidrosis, therefore the hankies.

in his defense it's a tough job and he ain't the only lead singer who sweats...not sure he has this "condition" or not, certainly "the boss" is totally soaked when he's finished his show...heck, now that i think of it, what lead singer of a rock band doesn't sweat?? lol maybe it's those people we should be worried about!

regardless whether it's the rants, the hankies, the banana shaker or the mic stand or?? it's ALL gord. love him unconditionally, exactly the way he is, and if it really bothers someone just look at paul instead, all night Smile i'm sure he'll appreciate the stares Smile

the fact that gord does change his antics makes it more enjoyable for me...over the years it has changed, as i have.

it's all good IMO

Re: Gord and his Hanky - thebends - 06-15-2009

Agreed, its all ALL good. There are a couple of hanky moves that IMO are actually quite brilliant: the "old man face" during IOD at Massey Hall and the "sail boat" during Nautical (again at Massey), as well as the "matador bull fighter" during the WC tour I thought were all very clever uses of the prop. However, I have to say the constant onslaught of Billy Ray tosses, and Gord's hacky sack style pick ups of the floor can have a tendency of spoiling the surprise of a performance, which other than the music, is something I've always loved about this band.

Re: Gord and his Hanky - hipnosis - 06-15-2009

Violet, I don't have one either!! Sad

*determined face* I WILL get a hanky in ROCHESTER >Big Grin

Re: Gord and his Hanky - Shane Kroeker - 09-14-2009

So.. How many Hipbasers have acquired a Gord Downie hanky? We shall make a list. Please list the concert which you attended, and the degree of sweat that was on the hanky (Unsweated, Dripped On, One-Wiped, Absolutely Drenched), and Story if you wish.
1) Shane Kroeker - Winnipeg Sept.9/09 - Unsweated - Gord received a fresh one from sidestage. Rolled it into a tight ball, proceeded to boot it up straight into the air, and land right by my row 3 seat.

2) VioletLite - Portland June 16/09 - SOAKED!! - Gord looked straight at me, balled it up and threw it to me. The huge dude in a hockey jersey next to me caught it and Gord gave him a bit of a 'look' and the guy handed it straight to me and said 'he definitely threw this to you'. Gord nodded his approval.
In my drunken state I proceeded to run around ecstatically during intermission like a raving lunatic showing it to complete strangers. And NegPhil. HAHA.

3) bauer - Vancouver June 24/09 - unsweated - Gord came out after the first set and asked Billy for a bunch of hankies. He then picked up a bra that was thrown on stage during the first set and proceeded to try and sling shot the hankies into the crowd using the bra as a sling shot. He said something about letting him live out a childhood dream. I was front row for this show and Gord stood right over me as he tried to sling shot the hankies into the crowd. One fell right on my head so I kept it. Gord then went to the far side of the stage to sling out some more hankies, when he was done he folded up the bra and walked right over to me and handed it to me directly with a smerk and and a shrug. Needless to say I was completely floored. So I got a hankie and a bra from Gord, hopefully someone video taped it as it was very hard to explain to the wife how I came home from Vancouver with a bra. I also got a complete setlist that night (both first and second set from Billy) Better than Christmas!! Not sure what I am going to do with them though.

Re: Gord and his Hanky - nautical - 09-15-2009

I find the hanky thing less annoying than hearing him talking to his mic stand about "you're just a microphone stand against a full-grown man" that was throughout his performances of the last couple tours.
