Yep same here for me! 30 bucks each for the Portland and Seattle shows. You should try to catch Portland too if the timing is right, I hear it's a good crowd. I haven't been there yet but I am excited for it.

I'd love nothing more than to do the entire west coast swing and follow the band around. But unfortunately I just don't have the funds to pull that off. I actually planned my entire trip around seeing the Hip in San Fran. I've always wanted to see a show at the legendary Fillmore, and the fact that it's my favorite band in the world is the icing on the cake. It's gonna be amazing! You'll enjoy the Seattle show for sure. I've seen the Hip there twice, and the atmosphere is always great.

I hear ya. I wanted to go to Abbotsford too but just can't justify it.

Although he was being a dick about it Billy Bob makes a good point. It's not surprising that a nation of people known for their reserved manners and politeness don't go all ape shit at live concerts. It's a choice each audience makes. If enough people "bring the gravy" the rest will get caught up in the moment and join in.

The shows are not over priced; if they were, the majority of the tickets would still be available. They are expensive.

You have a point...there has been many times in arena shows I've seen Gord pick the audience up and throw them against the wall with control... and these crowds don't seem to want to jump from the chairs...
It does affect the overall mood of the show to a certain degree.. makes me think of sneaking in a Rochester and maybe a Hamilton ?
AS for the new songs live...well first off most of the people sitting down haven't bought a Hip album since Music At Work... so they don't know the new songs live... like a hardcore fan who had the CD memorized a week after release.
A couple of the new tunes are a little suspect for me live... and a couple come off real strong like Love Is A Curse, Frozen and my favourite The Depression Suite. The Suite is one of the Hip's finer deliveries of their entire career. I like everything about it...from the layers to the lyrics, the bass line, the keys, the journey and the fact that most radio fans probably won't like this one... I could go on longer about how well Live it is... I get nervous thinking they might not play it tonight.
People have developed emotional connections to the older songs. That takes time, and the new songs need more time.

The crowds in Toronto are definitely more reserved on whole than other places, but from what I've seen at Massey Hall, the majority are into it.

Massey Hall has great sound but the whole no beer to your seats thing sucks. People go to a concert to unwind and enjoy themselves. 10 minutes to get a beer and 5 minutes to drink it. It really kills the mood for me.

I was at the show at Massey Hall on Tuesday night, I was also at the Kitchener show on the last night.
Such a difference in the crowd!
In Kitchener, pretty much the whole place was on their feet for the entire show. Not so much in Toronto.

I am not saying I or anyone needs a drink I am saying a crowd with less booze in them tends to be a more subdued crowd than an alcohol fueled crowd and that is a fact!!

I just got in from the show tonight, and it was ON.
Gord was magic, the setlist was great, and the fans were jacked.
It was probably the best show I've been to yet....top three anyways (out of a dozen).

Agreed I was there although this was my first Massey not sure about the others. There were some sitting seemed to be older I am 36 so I would say they were in there 50s. Maybe everyone was more lively because it was Friday less people work in the morning.
Anyway awesome show and I seem to be having some great luck I met Johnny Fay at the Music Hall and last night my wife and I celebrating our 6th anniversary run into Paul Langlois get some pics shoot the shit for a couple minutes. He is a great guy I don't want to be one of those pain in the ass fans and told him that and he said no problem not at all and he engaged me. These guys are good to their fans my wife could not believe how nice he was no wonder why we become such die hards. He said say hi to all the Hipbasers and thanks for all the support :thumb:

I did it in 2007 for the WC tour in SF and, man, no music and no band I've ever seen live comes close to what I witnessed there. It was like the Hip were in their prime, like they were all the rage and it was the only show in town. Being in a GA venue with the Hip is unreal. When they closed with Blow all of us in the "pit" were jumping up and down in unison, the floor was shaking.
Get there early to scope out the venue and see all the pictures. It's very cool.

Well I gotta say, I went to all 3 Kitchener shows and sat in 3 very different locations. Floor middle right side, Floor front left side, Balcony 1st row and I kept my eye on everything,
First show was kinda subdued for sure people filed into the auditorium and sat down quietly and waited, I saw half of the front floors on the right sitting on their ass's. It seemed they only got up for the Huge Hits.
Second show I didnt see anybody sitting down, Lots of people came in yelling and carrying on and it just seemed like a very happy night to be at a concert.
Third show was a bit more subdued that the 2nd show. People came in and yelled Hip Hip before the show but it was more relaxed. I noticed in quite a few pictures I took that there was actualy a lot of grey hair in my section that didnt belong to me. That being my 3rd show in 3 days my hip was kind of hurting and felt since I was in the first row I could sit down and still see and enjoy the full effect of the show without having to lean over and peer thru othres infront of me. So I sat and so did my wife, my kids were with us and they sat too ( they are just lazy it has nothing to do with the music) Well with all of us sitting down the couple on either side of us didnt bother to stand up either. The people behind us had no need to stand as they could see fine sitting down and the domino effect went back about 7 rows. We all clapped yelled and screamed and whistled and yea we got up and danced a few songs away but it was just kinda nice to sit down. My feet were tapping and my hand was slapping but my ass was sitting, No need for us to stand.
Now I gotta say that I downloaded the cd about a week before it came out and played it about 20 times from front to back in that week and knew every song just about off by heart and so did my wife and kids. So when the new stuff came on we were more than happy to see it preformed live and they did an EXCELLENT JOB. We sang along with every song sometimes very very loud. But I did notice that almost everybody around us didnt have a clue what songs they were or any of the words.
So its not that the new stuff is no good. Its just that a lot of fans are going to see the old tired but true hit songs.
Its not that the energy is not there it is but were all a bit older too. The band and all of us have grown older, ( we are the same) A lot of us work all week and a weekday concert does not mean we dont have to get up and go to work the next day, It does mean that we have a few less drinks and relax a bit more.
Weekend concerts are probably more rowdy than weekday concerts cause we can all sleep in and have a few extra drinks.
Thats my opinion.
I know the alcohol thing is an excuse because anybody who went to this past summers Motley Crue Fest at Molson Amphitheater knows how the crowd was not really rockin out that much, I was on lawns and it seems we all wanted seats to sit down. Vince Neil kept yelling for us to make noise. On youtube some comments are about how the toronto crowd was not into it and how other cities rocked out like crazy. Well im sure the alcohol ban had something to do with that also.
So my point is.
I dont really have one other than, If you go to the show , enjoy yourself, dont worry, jump , sit, laugh, cry, do whatever you want but dont say it sucked untill you are up on the stage giving it your all every night trying to make a packed house jump night after night, it just wont happen unless your a new punk group and your audience is all 17 year olds.

i always think that you got to make it happen. if you want to dance, dance. if you want to chill and listen, then do it. Cool to hear that you had the whole family there...in a few years, i will be bringing the kids - can't wait - the hip will be putting down album 15 or so by then...
sometimes, i just close my eyes at these shows and the music speaks to me (who said that?)...and other times i am jumping for the ceiling and dancing.
And I always think that the people around you can really set the tone - so i try to be one of "those" people. at the boston show, the guys and gals around us were all thanking us for 'making' the show - and we were thanking them for the same.
