I recall signing up for the Henhouse email discussion group way back in January of 1998. Back in those days, it was THE place to discuss The Hip in cyberspace. Lots of good folks there....Amit, Rob, Phil, Jeff, Dana, Sillirat, Livi, Mixmaster, LBD girl, etc. I have hanging over my desk a framed IVL poster that I bought from Sharon from Chicago that I met in the Henhouse. And who can forget the big album leak of M@W in April of 2000? Livi shared with everyone, and, of course, a big moral debate erupted. Livi made the NYE 99 badges too, along with tons of great bootleg cover art. During the PP / M@W / IVL era, the henhouse was an awesome place to talk about The Hip. But ever since Cuenet pulled the rug out, it's not been the same. Not everyone made the move over to the Yahoo incarnation. Hell, the two main guys that ran the list don't even really like The Hip anymore! But they're great dudes and it was a cool thing back in those days.

Those were great times. The secret (or not so secret) FTP for show sharing really brought us all together. Jason (fearnoart) and I had a blast uploading and tracking down shows. Heck, that's where the idea for Let's Gather 'Round The Fan came from.
Someone help me out, how early did we get M@W? It seemed like months, was it?

If I recall correctly, M@W was scheduled for release on June 6 2000. Livi got ahold of it the first week of April! I remember calling work to tell them I would be late, so I could go to a computer lab at the nearby university and download the MP3s faster than I could have at my home dialup connection. I came home, burned a CD and listened to it at work in between answering phone calls from annoying insurance customers.
Oh, and then a copy of it turned up on eBay! And some fan won the auction by offering 10 grand, and then didn't pay. The band thought it was cool that the community was sort of policing itself.

I wish I'd kept the list of people's ideas of what the actual song titles were going to be. Some were absolutely hilalrious.

The lyrics interpretaion discussions were often humourous and sometimes brilliant. There were a couple of members (can't rememeber their names - LittleBlackDress migh have been one of them) theat were writing graduate level interpretations of the songs. Excellent material. Definitely miss the Henhouse days but it's bee great discovering the Base!

I think at one point or another I had damn near everything that FTP offered, it was the best way to get as much live hip as possible. To this day I still miss that site/ftp.
Let's gather round the fan was truly amazing when it was first put together.
m@w was about a month and a half before the release date.
Is the hip IRC chan still active, I used to frequent it a lot back in the day, my handle was Slofire

LittleBlackDress was a Canadian gal living in the Philly area who I think was a philosophy professor of some sort. There was also Drew from BC, who (along with LBD) wrote some of the brilliant/humorous lyrical interpretations you remember. Drew even claimed he had written a master's thesis on Gord's work (I say "claimed" because he offered to share the thesis with anyone who contacted him privately, I did so, and never heard back - made me a mite suspicious, but I bet he really did). I remember the joke around the time of the Y2K concerts was that you'd be able to spot a henhouser at the concert because during the "that night in Toronto" line of Bobcaygeon, s/he would be the one looking around incredulously while the rest of the audience went berzerk. That was all predicated on the commonly held interpretation of Bobcaygeon's lyrics, which oddly completely escape me now anyway.

Absolutely, one of the (almost) original members. I remember the old days well - that's how I met some of the great people in the Hip community - Jeffro, Todd, Chris K (I believe we met back in '97/'98), Amit & Rob -true originals if ever there were, etc. Of course, Mark S. and the Holmes brothers were around back then too, perhaps more "under the radar" than now. I remember the "badges" made, I remember the Steamwhistle show, I remember lining up at Massey starting about 6pm when I left work around 5. Mostly I remember the great contacts that allowed me to meet people and see shows in other cities. I also remember standing beside the physical "Henhouse" at Molson Park the first time they used that concept for concerts.

haha... wow, blast from the past reading this thread. I was a henhouser from way back, though I didn't really post much at all back then. I remember downloading those M@W tracks from my dialup one song every 10 min. or so. :lol:
