Probably the best song on the CD. Love the mandolin. Love when the drums come in - the melody is great. Rob's solo comes out of nowhere and kicks my ass hard. Love, love, love it.

Thought I remembered something about this song on here.
Just listened to it again - had to throw a post up here - this is by far my fav on the album. Just a fantastic tune. Shocked to only see it once in the 'ner. Hopefully a few showings coming up.

The "Queen Of The Furrows" is like the Queen of the Fair in farming communities. Or colloquially, "Bitch of the Ditch".

I still crack up when I hear that line...not quite sure why.

Conjures up images of a scruffy Gord in a green Pioneer Seeds cap and Carhartts, gnashing a toothpick, one hand on the wheel of his Massey, the other on the back of the tractor seat as he keeps an eye on his plough, singing away as he putts across the corn stubble.....

this has become my girlfriends theme song, her family has a big farming operation so i`ve been calling her my queen of the furrows.....don`t think i`ll try calling her my bitch of the ditch though :lol:

How is it that Robert Plant and Jimmy Page never had a song called "Queen of the Furrows"--sounds like a very Zeppelin-like song title.

As it is, for some reason, I get sort of an acoustic, laidback Zeppelin feel with this track. Perhaps its the combination of mandolin and the torrid solo by Robby. This tune, to me, has shades of "Ramble On" in it. Anyone out there concur?

I don't care for the lyrics. Too weird for me.

Just something about "Hens cluck and roosters crow" that sounds dumb to me. The song is good I just don't care for the lyrics. I just think it's a dumb thing to sing about. (which is why a lot of rap and country to me is boring to listen to)

No band paints a more vivid picture of the Canadian landscape than do Kingston, Ontario's own, The Tragically Hip. In a melting-pot country that often has difficulty defining itself, it's a good thing we have them to remind us what it means to be Canadian. And what, pray tell, is more synonymous with Canadiana than the art of ploughing? That's a rhetorical question. But such is the subject matter covered by this week's song of the week, "Queen of the Furrows."

That's right folks. The Ontario Plowmen's Association holds an annual contest in which young women from all over Ontario compete in a ploughing competition, the winner of which is anointed "Queen of the Furrows." Only The Hip could pull off a song about farming... and pull it off they do! Of course, no song having to do with the agriculture industry is complete without a love story tie-in. Someone's sweet on the Queen and her sexy farming secrets.

But alas, it's not the lyrical content of this song that has propelled it to the top of my playlist this week. Of all the songs on The Tragically Hip's new album, We Are the Same, none rocks harder than this one. Its warmth and immediate catchiness give it that true Hip feel. Beginning softly with two acoustic guitars and a sprinkling of mandolin, the unmistakably unique quality of Gord Downey's voice captures the listener. As the song progresses, it quickly picks up steam. The drums crash in and before you know it things get electric with a shredding guitar solo the likes of which I can't remember having heard on any previous album. What results is an instant Hip classic and a moment that will forever be remembered as the time that ploughing met rock n' roll.
