OK...so the guy gave it a college try, good for him...I didn't like it much..
But more importantly, where can I buy that silver suit? Or are they silk pajamas? haha man, Don Cherry doesn't have anything on that guy's suit.

patiodweller Wrote:WELL!!! For all of you that have an eating disorder, watch this clip, you will throw up for the rest of the day like I did! I see some of you have a bias because you like the show. I am a fan of American Idol. But.... See, this is why Canadian IDOL is the worst show in the history of humanity. This also proves that the judges just say the opposite of reality because they're in on the joke that is this show. This cultural phenomena. I've seen/heard better kareoki at bars in Smiths Falls!! Smiths Falls!!! OK, I got to go puke some more. BRUTAL!! I hope Earl wins, that would be comedic. And then I'm gonna go listen to Little Bones by the HIP!
I agree. They all have to be part of some sort of inside joke. Seriously, there's no way Jake Gold really believes that was a good performance. I just find that impossible to believe.

Hate is a strong word, but it is normal to strongly dislike him.

earl please go away, being from lloyd this guys mug is everywhere. i had people at work today thinking i would be impressed by his bones performance...i told them,"au contraire mon frere, it made me dislike him even more if that were possible." canadian idol is quite possibly the biggest piece of crap on tv

Wow, now that i've gotten a chance to watch the full thing... Is he fuckin' drunk up there on stage or what is the deal with his balance? IMO it sounded more to me like he was just roaring the words into the mic as opposed to singing them, and he was just stumbling/flailing around like he had a major buzz on... He really didn't seem to have any sort or rhythm or relationship with the music that was being played, just spoke a song with music in the background lol.
I think I could go out to a bar some night and hear 20 people do just as well as he just did :\
I agree that it is VERY hard for someone to take any of The Hip's music and put their own twist on it, but I also think that this attempt was a failure at best.

I thought people were saying he DIDN'T try to act like Gord!?

Wow....I'm bordering on speechless. That was utterly God-awful.
I agreed with every word Jake Gold said up until those last two: "...until tonight."
Well, I guess he did sort of reinvent the song. He took a rock classic and turned it into a turd. Kudos.
To be fair, I don't watch American Idol and quite frankly completely fail to grasp the appeal of it. It's a glorified karaoke contest. What very little of it I've seen has been an abomination of music. I live in Salt Lake City, so David Archuleta has been overexposed here throughout the last season. His rendition of "Imagine" made me fervently pray for spontaneous hearing loss. As for Canadian Idol, that YouTube clip is the sum total of my viewing of that program.
But really - can anyone here provide a reason why these shows are successful? Is Canadian Idol as big in Canada as American Idol is in the states? It's embarassing and sort of hilarious in a deeply disturbing way that the most popular show on American airwaves is American Idol. If it provides any sociological commentary on contemporary American society, it's that Americans are brainless animals....you know what, I will just stop right there. I am not one to bash my own country.
As for the question of "Why wouldn't the Hip want their music on this show?" I could write a dissertation on this subject, but the nutshell of it is that the Hip as artists are the polar opposite of what these Idol shows are. The Hip have integrity and play "honest rock'n'roll." The Idol shows are about image and TV ratings. They're about pandering to the lowest common denominator in TV-land - and that's an unbelievably low level to which they sink.
That said, Gord D was once asked what his take was on Billy Corgan sticking a knife in the Smashing Pumpkins because he was tired of competing with the Britney Spears of the world. Gord's answer was eloquent and not at all a surprise to me. He said "There's room for everything." And he's right - there's plenty of "room" for these vapid talentless shows. But Gord saying there's room for them by no means translates to Gord wants his tunes associated with them. Two different things entirely.

This has nothing to do with wanting or not wanting to hear the HIP covered by other artists. The girl that sang Courage for that movie the Sweet Hereafter did a good job, the Headstones did a cover of New O which was good to go, The Wheakertons did a fantastic job with Fiddler's Green, that dude that is related to Billy Rae that did a unique version of Fully Completely rocked! And there was a version of Ahead By A Century in the movie Jumper that was good. This Little Bones was bad drunk kareokie.

this is the same board that tears apart American Idol, which although is crap, is a million times better than the joke that is Canadian Idol..who's kidding anyone..there is no talent on that stage..singers, hosts, judges..they are all embarrassing to this country

PRetty much what Gord does the last few times I've seen the Hip live. That post of IAGLIYDW from a while back was unwatchable. Gord trashed a beautiful song

i agree that hip are the opposite of "idol" shows, and have integrity and they dont pander but i still dont understand the reasoning why they wouldnt want their music on this show...it doesnt drop their music down to that level it drops earl and canadian idol to that level...it should be a compliment to the hip that someone else wants to perform their music even if it is bad like this...if i was a rock star and i saw someone on idol doing one of my songs i think that would be so cool and exciting...just imagine that, it must be a great feeling...sure you can say or think this isnt the best job on it or you can not like it but i hope the hip thinks its cool that this happens and i hope they dont feel like their music is being brought down to the lowest common denominator

Geez, I thought that I was the negative one on here. :nooooo First of all, Gord's voice has sounded fine every time I've seen him live. Secondly, Gord's yelling still sounds a gazillion times better than the warbling garbage that Earl was spewing. Gord trashed a beautiful song? I don't think so, I don't think so at all. Gord is the last guy in the band that people should be criticizing when it comes to live Hip performances.
