I love the fact that the people rush in and put up signs to block you from what is happening to the poor guy.
AND THEN they show several freaking replays of it.

We're getting the medal count we deserve.

Re: The Olympics -
robert goulet - 08-14-2008
Well Canada sure isn't off to much of a start medal wise are we.
I can't say I'm too surprised though. If you think about it, I'd say we are only off our goal by 2 or 3 medals at the most. Considering we were only projected to get into the low double digits, or early teens if we really kicked ass, I don't see this as a big deal.
We've still got all of the paddling events to go, as well as some great opportunities in diving and some of the martial arts disciplines to redeem ourselves.
I think the biggest problem is that we send WAY too many athletes to the Olympics in the first place. I think I remember reading that we sent somewhere in the neighbourhood of 230 athletes while a country like the US sends only 350. Last time I checked the US has nearly 10X our population. Nothing says that relative population is what determines how many athletes you send but it should be a little more proportionate than it currently is.
When I hear about athletes achieving a personal best and still finishing up in 28th, that's where I start to scratch my head a little bit and wonder. Pay close attention to the daily rundowns of our athlete's performance and you will see what I mean.
Having said all of that, I know exactly how much time, effort and determination it takes to get your body and your mind to the point that you can compete in an Olympic Games and call yourself an Olympian. It is such an incredible honour and I don't want to see anybody denied that right or priviledge but I still think that more aggressive qualification standards should be enforced so that we can streamline our coaching and financial resources to those most deserving.
Re: The Olympics -
skippy the wonder dog - 08-14-2008
But you can't. Streamline, I mean. You're proposing to rob Peter to pay Paul. If you take away the money from developing athletes to give it to a few elite athletes, where are you when those elite few retire?
Sending people to the Olympics isn't your major expense, it's training people to the point that they can get there. It's running the programs that allow athletes to develop that costs the money.
Re the number we send, that's a function of the number we can qualify, nothing to do with population. Small, poor countries send few because they enter few events, because they have no money to train athletes. Small, poor countries qualify runners for track events. Rich countries have qualifying athletes in many sports, many of whom (especially in Canada, especially in low-profile sports) have paid nearly all of their training expenses out of their own pockets. I don't see that not sending a men's foil team to the Olympics is going to translate into medals in the 400 m freestyle.

I'm anti-olympics...
instead of actually celebrating sport, and the athletes who dedicate their lives to it, it's all about the nationalism, and saying "my country just kicked you country's ass! WHOOOHOO! we're the greatest!"...
In reality, that athelte from your country won, and it had nothing to do with where they're from, and everything to do with how hard they train/compete...your country didn't win anything. We don't 'all squeeze the stick, and pull the trigger', the athletes do, regardless of how hard we cheer them on.
Also, the playing field isn't equal at all, which makes it kind of a bullshit event to me...the money just isn't there to support the athletes in a lot of countries/sports, and it's just not fair, especially for what many consider to be the most important world title...
i hate the corporate sponsors all trying to latch on to it and milk it forour own nostalgia and emotions...
that being said, I'll watch hockey in 2010, because i love hockey, and that's about it...not that i don't support our athletes, god bless 'em, i'm proud of them no matter how they finish, just for giving it their all and following their dreams, i just don't support the olympics, fuck 'em.

As compared to, say, NHL hockey. Right?
Yep, that Sean Avery sure could teach people a thing or two about sportsmanship, all right. Yup, it's just the Olympics where you see bad sportsmanship. And lip synching.

Swedish wrestler Ara Abrahamian threw down his Olympic bronze medal in protest on Thursday after his bid for greco-roman gold was ended by a decision denounced by the Swedish coach as "politics".
Abrahamian took the bronze from around his neck during the medal ceremony, stepped from the podium and dropped it in the middle of the wrestling mat then walked off.

Shortly thereafter, a member of the Belarusian badminton team edged out a Canadian gymnast in a mad dash for the discarded medal.
