Pretty much my thoughts. The person who came up with the song has every right to demand whatever. Anyway, I couldn't care less about HNIC's theme song. This outrage from the Canadian public (or from select people that are being shown, anyway) is ridiculous, just as it was ridiculous that some Canadians would have been devastated if the CBC would have let Ron go a few years ago. Well, it's history now.

CBC has announced that they will hold the contest for a new song, and they'll pay $100,000 for all rights to that song.

The Cferneyh Institute of Say What Ya Mean may now lambaste the CBC for announcing that they are "saddened" that today's talks did not result in a deal, when it appears that in fact the "talks" consisted of CBC saying, "take our previous offer or pound salt."

“I’m disappointed and confused as to what it would take to make a deal,” CBC Sports executive director Scott Moore said Friday in a telephone interview.

Oh please.

Though, I do think Ms. Claman is going to come to regret turning down the six figure offer to buy it out, if that was indeed a true offer........unless of course she wins her seven figure lawsuit.....

Can/will CBC start litigation against her for all her branding of the song as the HNIC theme? Isn't HNIC a CBC trademark?

TSN should pick up the song for Wed. night hockey.

I have to say, I am one of the pissed off viewers. For $75, to kill an old tradition, doesn't make any sense whatsoever (this is, after all, OUR channel).

But then again, that city in Ontario must have some funny dust floating around, because who hires a coach before a G.M.?

Thank God I'm a Habs fan. Saturday night will be spent watching RDS.

Some reports (since overshadowed by nonsense reaction quotes and reports of the contest) said that the money was not in issue. The financial terms had been accepted. The sticking points were the license terms and CBC's insistence that the lawsuit be settled as part of the deal.

Anyway, I don't think anyone should really be that upset about the song. What people should be upset about is CBC News, whose failure to distinguish the function of news reporting from that of corporate PR has them reporting a story that is substantially different from that of other news outlets, and misrepresenting their planned use of royalties from the new song to cast themselves in the best possible light.

Exactly, other than the lawsuit she'll probably never make another penny off this thing again. Maybe TSN would consider buying it just to stick it to CBC, but that seems like a long shot. I suppose Molson or Labatt might be interested in milking it for a few commercials next season but that would be relatively short lived anyway. The song has been iconic for 4 decades, but if it stops being played every Saturday night, it will be forgotten about pretty quickly.

Both parties should really be ashamed of themselves. Despite the reports that negotiations are over, there are still about 4 months before the regular season starts, so hopefully with a little bit of time to think about it they'll come to their senses and make a deal.

Earlier on Friday, Liberal heritage critic Denis Coderre told reporters in Ottawa that Conservative Heritage Minister Josée Verner must defend one of Canada's most famous musical traditions and do everything possible to ensure the CBC continues to broadcast the theme.

"The Hockey Night in Canada theme is a part of Canada's culture that goes beyond sport," Coderre said. "If the minister wants to show that she cares about Canadian heritage, this is her chance."
