Yeah, i thought he did a great job too. Got them to go into different directions then they normally would have, and you can tell that he really pushed people (especially Gord's voice, see: Fly) to work at their most chaotic, usually with greatly success.
I agree about WC (unfortunate abbreviation - oh, i mean the song), and Pretend. Rock is a leftover from the 80's, and while he seems to have grown out of that sound for loud songs, there's still something too 80's about the quieter songs on the album...

direwolf74 Wrote:Haircut-Rabbit Wrote:Is it just me or have they slowly stopped demoing new/unreleased material on tour?
They've never stopped doing that. During the spring and summer of '06 they were playing World Container songs long before the album came out.
Gord has stopped giving snippets of new lyrics/songs in rants during grace/hundredth/whatever jam, opting for 'dancing' and tossing his napkin in the air then catching it...
I mean, we all knew that 70 days rant would eventually be a new song. And like two weighted gym bags, love is to keep it all in was probably worked into an unreleased cut off WC...but this time I don't really think we have a sense.
Any ideas on that front?

They're just performing much more tightly, exactly like they were doing on the new record. It's the "new Hip", man.

For the next album:
If I had to choose between "Bob Rock" and "No album" I'd choose "Bob Rock".
If I had to choose between "Bob Rock" and "Other" I'd pick "Other".

Which Bob Rock could turn into bloated, ponderous anthems?
If you want Bob Rock, you're going to get Bob Rock. I'm kinda hoping not, not because Rock didn't get some good things out of them on WC, but because I really don't like his style.

Rock's a talented, accomplished producer. Why do we all assume that because he did one thing with the band for their last album that he wouldn't do something else for the next one?

Case in point,
Metallica - The Black Album
Metallica - St Anger
Two drastically different albums, one a classic, the other nothing more than a steaming pile of doggie doo

Bob Rock did an AMAZING job with WC!
I'll let you guys in on a little secret, Bob Rock can only be as good as the band that he's working with is...
When he did St. Anger, he was working with a band on the decline that had completely run out of ideas, creativity, and relevance...and the record refelcts that...The Black Album was good, because they still had something to prove (at least in their minds) after losing Cliff, they were still hungry, and still able to try new things without having to greatly compromise the sound that brought them to the dance.
Gravity is the biggest piece of crap I've ever heard (worse than St. Anger IMO, at least St. Anger had a few good riffs here and there), and it's no surprise, because Mike Turner was the driving creative force behind that band, without him, it's just Raine whining about things in an over-dramatic fashion, against uniinspired sub-par post-grunge alt-rock.
Seven Circles was a huge dissapointment for me...i'd alwasy loved the Tea Party, but that album is awful by their standards...they used to be so original sounding, and always seemed to be reinventing themselves, but on that album, it sounded like they were rehashing themselves, with the volume turned up, and the lyrics dumbed down...which seemed like a desperate attempt to garner some mass appeal in these eyes.
World Container on the other hand, sounds EXACTLY how it should IMO, and represents exactly where the hip are at this point in their career IMO...the best band in the world! hands down! The catchy songs sound catchier than ever, and the heavier numbers like Rink and Drop-Off have the boys sounding heavier than ever before IMO. Also, i find each member's individual performance is flawlessly captured and produced on the album, as mentioned before, especially the rythm section. Most importantly though, teh album has an incredible "feel" to it from start to finish, it flows better than anything they've EVER done IMO (unless you listen to FC in the "correct order").

I agree with you Darkest Canuck.
WC was incredible!
And as for when to expect another album, Rob Baker had said they had plenty of songs to record "this summer".
So, they may be heading over to Bath to record fairly soon, so to speak.
YEAH!
Cheers

At the time, yes... The best band ever (Metallica) had more important life issues than really caring about the music and it certainly showed. St. Anger was a piece of crap because everything else in their lives couldn't let their talent shine through. And they also didn't have a bassist, so instead of a bassist contributing to the music, they just had someone fill in the bass parts to match the guitars.

I'll agree that Gravity was OLP's worst album by far, but I can't agree that it was even close to as bad as St. Anger. As far as Mike Turner goes, he was good, but he brought a weird, very out there style with lots of effects and so on. Also he didn't leave the band as they would want you to believe. They kicked him out. As far as their current lineup goes, they are amazing. I'll agree that Maida isn't a good singer at all and he focuses too much on political and solo stuff... HOWEVER, their guitarist Steve Mazur is much more of a classic rock guitarist than Turner, but the most important factor is their 5th member, or unofficial member who does studio work and joins them on all their tours, Joel Shearer... He is FUCKING INCREDIBLE!!! If you can look past some of Raine's vocal blunders and watch them live when they extend songs and just jam them, they are unbelievable. The way they extended Superman's Dead and did this whole extra part at the end of the song on the last tour was unreal. I have a recording of it from their much music appearance and it's one of my favourite things to listen to. It's one of the best jams/instrumentals of all time. It is so incredibly magical and the way Joel does stuff on guitar, and Duncan and Jeremy are so tight together... DELICIOUS!

When I think of Bob Rock I think of The Payolas. I think of Rock and Hyde, Strange Advance, Motley Crue and The Cult. His work with Metalica looks to me like a professional dog trainer working over a defiant show dog.
Rock personifies the rock and roll spirit that runs through the decades regardless of fashion or trend. He can focus the" sound" of any talented musicians into undeniably tight, groovy rock songs.
Bob Rock stepped into the Tragicaly Hips world and refocused the band. World Container is not just a great album, it's one of their best. If they are able to record at the Bathouse in their "safe zone" with Bob, I think the results could be historic.

Wc was a very strong album from a band that is still making quality music. I think Rock got the guys to really enjoy making music again and to appreciate how special it is to be in a great rock and roll band.
On the rants verses Gords new schtick.... I truly believe that GD is simply trying to save his voice from getting trashed each tour. Gord is basically the only singer I've heard of who rants through most of the instumental inteludes. I think he realises or has been told to lay off the yelling and ranting before it's too late to save his unique tool we all love...his voice.

Here’s hoping the boys do a few concerts/festivals this summer and just like the summer of 2006, we get a glimpse at a few new songs…
